Do cichlids like plants? I have some artificial plants from FG, they look pretty darn real, they're not like the ones from petsmart. So I was planning on using those rocks and doing a scape with the plants too. what do you think?

Most will not work, but there are a few tougher plants you can get away with from time to time. Anubias tend to be tough enough to withstand the cichlids' nipping, I try to use plants that I can anchor to rock/wood so that the fish can't uproot it. I've had some luck with Anubias, Anacharis, and Bucephalandra

No live plants for sure. I haven't had success with live plants in African tank.

Many have had success. I don't use them because cichlids love to dig in the substrate. If you plan to use them make sure you place rocks on top of them so that when your cichlids dig, the rocks can hold them in place.

Tank looks very nice, glad you and your wife came to a consensus! Mine's the opposite, I can barely control her aquarium aspirations! And for that I am thankful. Be sure to post updates, want to see how this progresses.
