depends on how much rock you plan on putting in the tank... Most tank set ups I see don't put much to warrant the need but if you want the added sense of security then I would say yes. If it were me I would most definitely use it.
This tank has a little over 300lbs of rock in it.

I usually use eggcrate but after using the large rocks for so long I don't think it's necessary for some tanks, this one being one of them.
