  • @Sunny, I think what Soymilk is trying to say is that in terms of Sharpness.. :

    Nikon 50 f/1.8G > Nikon 50 f/1.4G > Sigma 50 f/1.4 HSM

      • There is no "one lens" to rule them all. figure out what your budget is, and if ya want to shoot fishes get a lens and a flash, a flash is cheaper than you think.

As far as you asked, is a 50 the same as a 75 on your sensor, i say who cares, the point is you said your 35 was too wide on your sensor, so now you know you need to go higher.

how much do you want to spend?

        • Marshall, Jim is helping me locate a 50/1.4 for around 300 clams, to me that's reasonable for a good lens. I'm also picking up a 35/1.8 from Trung, but now I'm unsure if I really need it. BUT, the 35 does take some nice photos and I would like to have it on hand rather than not.

Flash prices are a bit hazy right now because I'm unaware what range they sell for, especially the ones that support wireless activation.

          • no doubt, the 50 1.4 is a good lens.

If i were getting this just for fish, i would get the 50 1.8 for about 100, and spend the other 2bills on lighting.

              • At that price point....look for a used sb-600.

New goes for $230 I believe.
I ate my fish that died.

                • They still sell those?

Also, is the $100 50mm lens the AF-D kind without the motor?

                  • Yeah, the sb-700 replaced it.....but that's around $300.

The 50mm af-d does not have a built in AF motor.

                    • CL has a couple of those AF-D listed. Wonder if that's the model that Marshall is referring to.

Will read up on SB 600 vs. 700

                        • yes the af-d is usually pretty cheap, and yes make sure you can use it with your d200.

as far as lighting goes, for just for my fishes, i bought 2 these, but you really only need one.

Now before everyone starts chiming in, i realize these have some bad reviews, but these have worked for me just fine at home for the pics i take of my fish, and the occasional small product shot i do at home. I don't rely on these for work, that's another beast. Also make sure you get the one with the metal hotshoe

                          I also use these

                          Again for home use.

The whole point is that for the price of a 50 1.4, you could get the 1.8 plus flash and triggers for on the cheap.

And again, i'm just using the fish taking purpose as the scenario.

And with the money left over you could get some of these

For a softening the light just get a big white Styrofoam cooler

I'm not saying these are the best pieces of equipment, but a guarantee they will get the job done for a small budget.

But again just make sure the d lens works with d200, i think it does.

If you want to come over some time i can show you.

I think i sold you some driftwood before, so i think we have met

                          • I love your lighting solution Marshall! Yes, I did get some driftwood from you a little while back. Much appreciate you showing your light setup for fish. I'll pm you and set something up for the tutorial.

                            • Agree with photo dude. 50 1.8D and Used SB600 should fit the bill and be cheaper than a 50 1.4.

                              • Man I'm late..... I type something out on my phone and y'all already talking about flashes

                                A) Best bang for the buck is to get both the 50mm f1.8D and 35mm f1.8g for under the price of the 50mm f1.4g.
                                100 used + 150 used = $250

                                B) Or get the 50mm f1.4d for about $250-300

                                C) The 50mm f1.4G (Jim's version) is gonna run you $500+ new and 350-400 used. But ask Jim to try out his 50mm f1.4g first and see if you like it. I think it'll work better for fish but for normal stuff and people I like the 35mm better.
