for tanking pictures of my fish i use A priority.

Nikon 60mm f2.8, 105mm f2.8 are both good. I see a Tamron 180mm on craigslist for $250. Sigma 105mm is good too.

But for fish you'll have better luck using a 50mm f1.4 or you can use a flash overhead in wireless mode like thai. Either way works. You can't go wrong either way. Whats your exact budget? You can rent the $900 dollar 105mm VR for 40 bucks at photorentalsource.com Its in houston so you can pick it up. That way you can test it out to see if you like the focal length and mess around with it to see if you can snap good pictures.

All those pics weren't taken with a macro lens either. It was either a

Sony 16-80mm cz kit lens, 70-300mm, 24-70mm Carl Zeiss
Nikon 24-120mm, 50mm f1.4
Canon 24-105mm, 50mm f1.4

no macro lenses, seriously haven't touched my macro in a while. I sold my macro photography tripod . Macro lenses are awesome, but my whole point was you can get decent results with tons of other lenses. I'd rather get a lens to take pics in low light/portraits/fish.

I used a number of different lens before I settled with my 60/2.8. But I don't ever sell anything really. Which makes me picker about what I buy.

thai is right about the 1:1, a true macro lens lets you really get in there. here are some pictures of actual 1:1 shots with a 100mm macro. If you got the patience and time, its a beautiful thing.

100mm macro lens. Sometimes with flash ring or multiple flashes with pocketwizards. good fun.

Just getting the lens itself is not going to do it.

There is a whole technique to taking macro shots that optimizes the lens' main close up function.

I guess I dont really need a marco lens. I normally use the lens that came with my d40 or my 70-300mm with VR. Ive only used the lens that came with the d90 body once lol. Im thinking ill get a fixed focal length lens for low light and will focus up close less than a 2 feet.

If all you ever had were kit zoom lenses then try a low light prime first. You will be surprise how many nice shots you can get with just these lenses.
