The 35mm f1.8 G for nikon is my all time favorite for Nikon.

35mm works pretty good for apsc cameras. But if it's indoor shots, bounced flash ftw. Gives you the best picture quality to price ratio. Pretty much use any lens and still get great shots, and don't have to worry about the kids running around too much and having blurry pics. Prob with fast primes is nailing focus. Sometimes dof is just too small at f1.4 or f1.8.

      I have the 50mm 1.8f. I guess I'll mess with that a bit more.

Taking the family to Disney World in July and wanted to make sure I'm able to capture every moment. I did a practice round when I took the kids to Sea World a couple of weeks ago. I brought my Tamaron zoom lens and the pics were a little soft IMO.

Nikon 35mm is a great fast lens. Good bokeh too.

That's a pretty decent lens. Post up some samples. In my experience with a lens like that, usually you have to use a fairly high shutter speed to match the focal length. Even with VC I'd probably wanna match the shutter speed with the focal length.

With kids running around you'd prob have to use a shutter speed of 100 or faster. With the aperture at 5.6 its kinda slow and very limiting indoors.

Thomas, for indoors you can bounce the flash off the ceiling. Pictures sill look really natural. Like Troung said, you got to use high shutter speeds but the lens is too fast to let in anymore light so the extra light as to come from some where.

Personal, I don't think you need zoom for indoor shots. I prefer UWA.

Personally I don't like ultra wide angle too much, I prefer a more versatile lens. ESP for a trip like Disney world, switching lenses all the time On trips is no fun.

Tamron 28-300 for outside, switch to 50mm f1.8 for inside. Perhaps look into getting the 35mm f2.0. Primes are cool for the most part since they are so small. You can throw them in your cargo short pocket.

What lenses do you have already?

My brother got two little girls now. The older one is 2yo and the younger one is 1yo.

I lose some shots when they are in the living when I try to get both of them in the shoot.

I recall the UWA being BEAST for indoor shots b/c I was able to capture everything.

Also, the last time I was at a GHAC meeting I tried to take some group shots inside with my 50mm/1.8f and it wasn't happening....just couldn't get more than 2-3 people in the shoot.

I guess it depends on your style of shooting. I go for more of the portrait look. So I tend to lean towards longer focal lengths. This was shot at 40mm.

Wide angle is good if you like capturing the setting/background as well. Bounce flash ftw in this shot. But that tokina 11-16 was a pretty badass lens. Best wide angle lens ive used so far. Still waiting on testing out a Nikon 14-24mm, supposedly the best wide angle 35mm lens.

I miss my old Carl zeiss 16-80mm and 24-70mm. Those lenses were über awesome.

I'm still a rookie at photography, but always looking to learn.

Here's a picture I took where I was pretty far out. I thought it was kind of soft, but I suppose my settings could have been better.

                            Exposure 1/125
                            Aperature f/14
                            Focal Length 238mm

Sorry for the n00b question, but what is UWA?

I think the lens is workable with a flash if I'm close to the subject, but once I get some distance - like 20'+, the color is not equally balanced with a flash.
