Maybe because I'm into saltwater, but I like the planted tanks better. so much more to keep the eye busy. I like some of the tanks with just rock, but they have to have enough rock to either build up the 2 reef look to almost the top or enough to cover the whole bottom to about halfway up the tank. I realize alot of cichlids just tear up plants. but given how much plain rock cost relative to saltwater rock, I don't see why one wouldn't stack some serious rock piles in a freshwater tank.

That is because you are looking still photos of those tanks. Most of the rockscaped tanks are tropheus tanks. If you were to see these live you would see a beehive of activity and the social interaction of the fish. Which to me has always been the highlight, I enjoy a well decorated tank but I prefer to look at the fish.
                120g - Tropheus Moorii Kambwimba
                180g - Petrochromis Macrognathus Dine/Tropheus Moorii Namansi I

The more rocks, the less water in the tank. JMO
