  • lionfish at houston zoo

just thought i'd add a pic i took at the houston zoo. the only enhancement was i darkened it and added 5% contrast. really made the coloration pop.

    feel free to critique away!

That's a beautiful photo! I have no critique because I am amazed you got such a nice shot at a public aquarium. Between fingerprints and scuffs on the tanks, I never could get a quality pic. This is amazing...never would have guessed it was the zoo.

my husband does salt water, and i LOVE lionfish! i wanted him to get a dwarf volitian, or a fumanchu. but i settled on a mandarin. so, i take pics of them at the zoo. i had to wait a while for everyone to move, and yea, had to wipe the glass lol. but i was super pleased. the swirl in the back is another one.

I like the shot. Very nice use of composition vs. the standard fish in the middle type shot (of which I'm very guilty of myself). It shows some personality.

Do you have any type of photo editor? If so, which one? It is pretty easy to get rid of all the specks caused by floating debris and stuff on the glass. These specks are tough to deal with because if you try to sharpen the picture or up the contrast or levels too much, it accentuates the debris. But if you clone them out first, no issues. You can also use a selection tool and sharpen only the fish, but getting rid of the specs is better.

i used photoshop to darken it and ad contrast, but i'm still learning because everything you are talking about i have no clue how to do. lol.

Hey my feonce's pet sloth is at the zoo just around the corner from their saltwater tank. We donated her to the zoo because we downgraded to a 1 bedroom apt. Her names lola and they just added her to the exhibit with another sloth.
