Re: Who went to Alex's shop Sunday?

    CF,

I wonder the same thing. Hell, I been knowing Alex for years and he used to keep wonderful tanks.

Honestly, some stuff you cannot beat. It's hard trying to do mail order and not seeing what you are paying for compare to walking into  a store.

My Moshi was a little out of price range...But for the size I could not beat it.

    CF, check your pm

Re: Who went to Alex's shop Sunday?

I think the problem with messy tanks he has, is that he just got a huge shipment in on Friday, and things are a mess.

Also, he packs 10 lbs of **** in 5lb bag in that store, so he does not have any storage.  He also rents the space about 3 doors down, that is full of Oceanic Tanks and Stands that he got in surplus when Oceanic moved from Dallas and closesd their warehouse in June of last year.

So he aint got room to put stuff.

Alex's tanks need some work.  But when your selling fish, catching fish, importing fish...dealing with 800 HFB customers a day   everyday  , that all want to ask 500 questions 8) , and then want to still have some kinda life at home,...I can see where some things can get slacked off.

Alex's imports are the best in Texas.  I think that only a few internet importers may have more, but thats it.

So maybe we need to work out a barter system......  Clean a tank get a percentage off your purchase.  Clean more tanks, get a higher percentage off your purchase.  I would clean a few tanks to save some money any day....LOL.

Re: Who went to Alex's shop Sunday?

              Geoff,

You and I and all the other HFB members care not about the conditions of the used tanks in the store, we are "hooked" on anything fishy. I smiled the first time I saw it a month ago. (That huge 125 by the front door)

I was suggesting as a manager of a store, that sells directly to the public, and I do believe Ultimate Fish probably does deal a little bit with the public, is the fact, that the public notice's these things and does not have the same appreication as we do, for a used 125 gallon tank sitting right by the front door that looks like it was sitting in a garage for 6 months.

I understand the fact, that is one huge tank and there is not alot of room to move it around in a crowded store with tons of inventory, but I'm sure a few minutes could be found during a few of those rare moments when they (the employee's) are not being bombarded with HFB members and the pesky public shoppers, where they could try to make that used tank just a bit more attractive. I know for a fact, that if it was cleaned up and advertised properly, it would not be around as long as it was or still is perhaps?

I would have sold that tank in less than two weeks with all that traffic you wrote about. I would have put together some kind of "Manager's Special" "Buy today and receive a free Hood, Light and Top Glass", whatever??.
My point is, these tanks are valuable inventory and should be addressed and moved quickly to increase profits.

Again, I was speaking as a manager, and maybe I'm a bit "munkish" about this, but as a manager, it would be high on my priority list to maintain the appearance of my store, especially the immediate area around the front door....you know how important first impressions can be.....or i'm sure you have heard the expression.

Don't get me wrong here Geoff, I'm not throwin alex under the bus here, I've never met Alex, and, I like the store, and I like the folks that work there, and I like the selection of really cool fish,  and I even appreciate the selection of used tanks there too.

No, I'm not looking for a job, but I am interested in seeing Ulitmate Fish get even bigger and better......

Well, I think I would rather look at dirty glass then dead/sick fish.

I actually didn't notice it with all the *BLING-BLING* fish in the tanks.

If anyone needs a talking to.......there are other places around town that need it more then Alex's place.

Re: Who went to Alex's shop Sunday?

Yeah that Used 125 by the front door does look rough, but..I am not sure how long its been there.  It is a used tank.

I agree with you CF, that it would sell much faster if it was cleaned-up or atleast all that old gravel it in was removed.

Alex is a hobbyist in a businessworld.  I know it can be hard keeping up appearances when your busy, and trying to balance a store budget.

What I will tell you, is that his priorities are the fish, and not a used tank.

Re: Who went to Alex's shop Sunday?

There's no need to defend Alex and Ultimate Fish guys, I shop there at least 2 times a month. I maybe a tad anal when it comes to crusty used tanks in the doorway, but it didn't stop me from bringing home some new little friends from there.

I don't think anyone is defending him.....just stating that no one probably notices the crusty tanks since most go in there to see the "candy"!

Truthfully I didn't notice any tanks laying around but I did notice those Red Bulu points that I gawk at for the majority of the time I am there every single time I go there. 8O

This is my feedback.  I'd rather pay a higher price with another lfs or individual than do business with Alli.  I had a very, very bad business experience with him.
