  • Velvet information please.

I got some free pleco's super red, calico and some blue eyes which I brought home and put in a quarantine tank which I'd had running for a bit. One died on the way home but I didn't see anything wrong with it. The next day, 2 more were dead, and they sort of had bumps the color of their skin on them. I noticed the other plecos had the same bumps but I couldn't tell and they were all over so it looked like it was normal for them. Since the plecs died and I couldn't tell anything was obvious wrong, I thought it was aggression and moved some plecs to other tanks.
It was in the other tank where the light was better I was able to see that the plec had 2 of these dots on it's eye as well as all over it's body. The dots are the size of ich or larger, but yellowish/orangeish in color. The closest thing I've found that looks like it is velvet. I've gotten some API general cure and treated the quarantine tank. I've moved the plec back in, one plec died and the third I can't find in the tank I thought I put it in. I've turned of the lights to those tanks and I'm watching the other fish to see if anyone develops it. I've also put salt in all the tanks.

One thing I'm wondering is the nets, containers and water changing stuff; can I bleach those? Will bleach kill velvet? I'm considering just killing everything in the tanks and bleaching the tanks but I wasn't sure if bleach will kill velvet.

any other suggestions or thoughts on treating this parasite are welcome. I'm going to try and get some pictures of it to post here.

    thanks!

Here are pictures with arrows pointing to the spots. this fish has them all over. Oddly, the other one left alive, a blue eye, doesn't have any. It looks like all the rest are dead.

Maybe Chilodonella? It appears they are fairly susceptible to it and it appears similar to velvet. Here is a thread over on Planet Catfish

Thank you for your information! I think that is what they have. the one pictured above is dead today. I didn't check to see if the one not showing any symptoms is alive or dead.

Ouch that looks terrible. Doubt if it is one of both mentioned. Both disease show a sort of slime-coverage instead of these spots aso to my believe.
Think this might be a bacteria or other kind of parasite.
I'd open a thread at PC. A lot of specialist en experienced keepers of these beautiful fish are around. Regards Aad

Thank you for the suggestion. All the fish showing the spots are dead. The spots went away on their death. but I'm very concerned about my other tanks. I will do as you suggest.

Well I registered with planetcatfish.com twice and neither account got sent the registration email. And apparently if you don't log in, you can't talk to anybody or post that you are having a problem :( So if someone is already a member could you let the moderators know about this problem?

              thanks!

Just an update. I had spread some of the plecos to other tanks before I realized it was a disease killing them off not aggression. And today I see spots on the fish in those tanks the plecs were in. :( So I'll be sterilizing 4 tanks. Man that hurts! :(

Grrrrr. I'd seriously start a thread at PC (with the pics shown overhere). If / when somebody could tell what disease it is, you can add specific treatment instead of sterilizing whole tanks aso! Regards Aad

I would dearly love to start a thread there, however, they seem to be having a problem and I can't join and I can't even tell anyone there I'm having a problem registering. :(

Someone on another site has suggested treating it like ich, massive water changes, salt and copper.

                    Thanks

Shall I try to make a thread overthere? I don't like treating without knowing what we're dealing with !

Asked on the UK-forum. No clear answer, only the advice to treat with Methylen-blue.
Hoping the PC-specialists will come up with a clear diagnose and treatment.

Copper sulfate is also very effective against velvet and chilodonella.

Mix 12grams of pure copper sulfate (Root Kill at Home Depot, cheap) in 1gal of distilled water and mix well. Add 1ml of solution per 1gal of tank water volume and treat for 2 weeks minimum. Replenish the copper taken out during water changes. This treatment is only safe for fish in pH above 7.4 - 7.6 with hardness above 150ppm.
