  • How long should I use two filters?

OK so I had a 10 gallon tank with a tetra Whisper 10 filter. That tank cycled well after 4 weeks or so but then I transferred everything to a 20 gallon tank. I have added an Aquaclear 20 filter and currently have them both running. At what point can or should I remove the original 10 gallon filter? And would be be smart to get that back into another tank (without fish) to keep it cycled? Or will it be a mute point without fish in the tank? Any suggestions here? I'd like to set up a hospital tank.

Edit: the new setup has not cycled yet

You can leave both on the 20g and if you need the hospital tank. You just move the 10g filter over to the 10g tank. The filter will be cycled and you won't need to ever cycle it again. You see the Bactria in the filter is all you need. So the old cycled filter on a new tank. Is instant cycle for the new tank. Also no carbon it the filter for the hospital tank. Carbon will remove the meds.

Like Troy said, keep both of them running. To seed new filter faster, use some old media from the old filter.

No problem. You actually want to provide over-filtration a little bit. I'm using AC50 or AC70 for my 20 gallon tank.

Now that I know you have an AquaClear filter, good. That is the filter you want to use for a bag of peat.

It's always good to have more than one filter in case one goes out. This keeps an outage from becoming an emergency

I always put as many hang on the back filters as possible on every tank not including canisters...That way I always have cycled filters and if one filter goes out while I'm at work, it's not a big deal...

old thread, but redundant filtration is always good. block flow with objects or plants.
