Wondering why they only have that many fry in a batch.
I just removed a cave full of long fin albino last week, and it must have been 50 fry (no joke)

It's no much as that is all they had, as it is these were all that survived. It is more rare to see these breed than most fish. As far as I know there have only been a handful of successful breeding groups in captivity.

Man... if only Zeebs had 50 fry each time... then they wouldn't be endangered.... (or THAT expensive for that matter).
I hear the average clutch is about 10-ish.

I see. I guess that's why they are RARE.
Do you check on them often?

When I see a male occupying a cave, I know that something is going on. Like a clock work, I see eggs in the cave in the next few days. (Only 3 batches for me so far tho lol)

Naw, i just let them do their thing. I find that constantly shining a light down their cage really disturbs them and spoils the mood.
Apparently zebras tend to breed during the rainy season, which means some sort of environmental trigger. I haven't had a spawn since august so i don't think i successfully replicated the trigger.

Try gathering rain water and using it when you do a water change. Just a thought.

                    Rainwater means really soft water?

Letting them do what comes natural is best. As for their breeding trigger. It sounds like it's the temperature change.

Water change usually will change temperature and is the trigger for most of my cichlids. Not sure about pleco, but I think it works the same.

Yeah rain water is what I know a lot of people would use for SA fish cause they like the softer water.

I read an article a long time ago by Heiko Blehr.
H stated that for species who's breeding is triggered by barametric pressure shifts - ie; rainy season breeders, like corydoras and zeebs.
Get a couple smaller aquaclear powerheads, (the kind you would use on an undergravel setup. Mount them sideways, angle the output at the glass tops if you have them. Essentially it creates rain, the noise, the humidity outside of the aquarium, just above the water service is drastically increased, also, during a waterchange, it will really create a rainstorm effect.

Here's a video of my old 125g with my arowana, it has this setup, i was breeding sterbais, l191, and lda01 on this setup.
The cories began breeding almost instantly with this setup in place, i had a few dozen eggs on the glass on rocks, on wood.
couldn't hurt to try, if it worked with snowballs I don't see why it wouldn't work here. Plus extra water movement never hurt with fancies.

I have an AC70 on the 20H gallon right on top of the pleco cave, so I guess it re-create water fall effect lol.
