  • Mantis Shrimp #2 The Peacock

This guy is freaking mean. My other mantis shrimp is the chillest of their kind I've seen, but this guy is a straight up arse hole. Smashing, bashing, rolling over on it's stomach like a puppy asking for a belly rub (but we all know it's a trap), running, picking up random objects, and just flat out trying to smash the tank. He's about 3" big, not as big as Wes' monster and he doesn't seem capable of smashing my tank, since he's tried over 100 times.
    His name shall be
    THE DEATH HAMMER.

You can special order them from fish gallery, depending on size, they can go from 50-90 dollars.
Wes, yours is a monster that will eat mine.

They're fun animals. If you don't stick your hand in there.

I feed mine chopped shrimps, if there's no food, he'll smash the snails. He prefers shrimps over snails.

You can get these for next to nothing if your timing is right. Every winter in January and February they are in abundance in our bay systems. The shrimpers catch them by the thousands and in turn pass them off to the bait camps. You can meet the shrimpers where they dock at and arrange for some of these live. Plan to go and talk 1 day ahead of time for an arrangement to be picked up the next day. The shrimpers go out on a daily basis this time of year and are in port every day so it's not all that hard to do. The boats down by the bridge in Kemah will be more than happy to accommodate you once they know you want some. Planning is everything.

That's pretty cool. You should bring back some. Do people around here eat them? I know that in Vietnam, they're a delicacy. They taste like lobster, but they're not meaty, not as meaty as crawfish.

                            I think you have a

                            Gonodactylaceus ternatensis

                            Not peacock

                            Because of the red stripes

Nice catch. I was looking at it while it was at FG and was a bit confused as to why it had red lines on it.
