  • NOW it's a Discus tank!

Up until now, I have had a tank that was set up to be a discus tank but until today it was a tetra, cory, oto and plant tank. You can see the build here. Today it actually became a discus tank. Other than the plants that I have listed in the build thread and some additional corkscrew I added (thanks Jake), the tank is home to 3 Tiger Turquoise Discus, 30+ Cardinal Tetras, 16 Rummy Nose, 8 Sterbi Cory, and 4 Oto.

I plan to add 3 more discus in the near future, but still haven't decided on which ones. Would like some red in the tank but don't want anything that would pepper too much. One option is the Virgin Reds they have at HAW but not sure on that one just yet.

Here are a few pics of the tank & residents as of today. Please pardon the phone camera quality.

I like the pigeon reds if you can find the clean ones but your substrate still might cause a little peppering. Just look for clean ones at haw if they have no peppering in his tank they won't really in your tank.

If u don't want any peppering do mot grt any pigeon blood based fish. . Peppering is based on the genetics of the fish and the environment.. more or means any orange/red discus.. pb, red melon, fire red, yelow diamond.. etc.. virgin red are a Brown based discus
But ur black substrste and background will darken their natural colors. Kind of like what u see in ur tank now... last I was haw.. their bb tanks were light colored.. the pb I bought had very little pepper but my tanks are all bb with white bottom and back

Here are a few pictures with my 3 new additions. After a couple days of smacking each other around, I think the group has reached some agreements.

Yes I did. I have been seeing how the plants do in the 6500K spectrum. I like the crisp white look of the 10K bulbs but was told I was just asking for a bunch of algae. So far my anubias and crypts are adding new leaves and I haven't needed to clean algae off the tank glass or plants once.
