Aren't they pretty much all the same?

Yup. They are all the same. Some are easier to read than others, but they all calibrate the same, as well as serve the same purpose.

I have the Marine Depot Pro Refractometer and also the C-Scope from JBJ. The Marine depot costs more, but I prefer the JBJ since the display is much larger and easier to read. Basically, they all do the same thing and will give the same results if calibrated the same. I would get the cheapest one out there or a used one since they really can't "go bad" or give false readings if calibrated correctly.

Which ever you get, buy a small bottle of calibration fluid. If you don't calibrate it you are blindly mixing saltwater. I have seen them off on their readings quite a bit when I have calibrated them.

The MD one doesn't have calibration fluid. You use RO water to calibrate it.

The calibration fluid is around 5.00. I think it calibrates to 1.026 which is alot closer to the reading we are looking for than 0. Just my opinion.

I always find that I have to recalibrate before every use. When I was diving off the coast of hawaii in June, I filled about 8 water bottles worth of sea water. I now use that as calibration fluid.
