Hmmmmm, there are a lot of options with that budget.

I would get a dedicated prime lens that is macro/micro.

The best of the best from nikkor is the 105m/2.8f. I have shot with this lens and it's beast mode! But at $800 it has a beast price too. High grade professional lens. If I get another marco lens it would be this.

Next up is the tokina 100/2.8. I never shot with it but Ken Rockwell says is on the level of the 105m. for $500 bucks it fits your budget.

A another good option that fits your budget is the 60mm/2.8. It's a sold lens but you really have to get up close and personal so you may lose some shots of like insects. This the lens I have.

Don't forget the used market. I've seen the 105/2.8 used for anywhere between 400-600 depending on condition and seller.

I got the D. Both AF on the D90 so that's not a big deal.

Most reviews say the D's optics are better.

I would only get the G if I was shooting with an old camera like the D40 or D60.

All the macro shots I post on this site is from my 60mm/2.8f.

The new 105mm g has VR and N coating, that's why it's so expensive. I think the 105mm d is like $400ish. Another lens to look at is the tamron 90mm f2.8, usually from $200-300.

What are you taking pictures of? Macro lenses can be a pita to use.

For fishes....VR will help a lot.

But for shrimps or corals and the like...tripod FTW!
