  • Prohibited Texas Fish... to import, possess, sell, or place in water in this state

There are several of these which shocked me. I am in no way claiming I possess any of these fish or am I claiming I have ever seen any of these fish on this forum. However I just thought I would once again pass this around. I know I have seen it before... but it doesn't hurt to show it again.

"except as authorized by rule or permit issued by the department" or it is illegal.... that is what I am gathering. The thing is.... the max fine is $500 as a class C... so depending on the cost, or profit...it may be worth it for someone doing it without a permit - That is for the seller... for the buyer... you face the removal of fish, lost of what you paid for it... and the max of a $500 fine as a Class C misd.

Well, after you do the same thing over and over again or it is a large scale operation I am sure it could mean jail. Tx Parks and Wildlife doesn't mention large scale or repetitive consequences....prob have to check the law books for that one.

OH also, the person has to be reported or caught in the process for this to matter.... just saying. However, here on this forum we do our best to live honorably :-) and only purchase legal stuff

I have acquired quite a few critters on that list over the years (all have since died), but many make it in as accidental extras and are not noticed until they reach a local dealer. I actually see far more at larger retailers then LFS's as they can identify what they have and what might appear odd. You can find Piranhas to Clariids on a fairly regular basis here in Houston if you keep your eyes open and know what to look for. Petco and Petsmart are notorious for extras in with silver dollars and kuhli loaches...

All species Electric Eels, (Amusing as there is only a single species, is actually a Gymnotid knifefish)
All species Swamp Eels, Rice Eels or One-Gilled Eel, Family Synbranchidae (Tulip Eels, though not actually a true eel as they all lack any fins)
All speciesFreshwater Eels, Family Anguilliidae (True Eels, but we have native species)

There are quite a handful of Eels that are seen in pet shops and are quite legal to possess. Spiny Eels (Mastacembelidae), Freshwater Morays (Muraenidae), Rubber Eels (Gymnophiona or Caecilians, actually an amphibian) are just a few examples. There are a vast amount of different Eels and they are usually not related at all. True Eels are oddballs and I have never seen them offered for sale. The most commonly seen in my opinion are the spiny eels and there are 5-6 that you see fairly regularly at most fish stores (Fire, TireTrack, Peacock, Half-Banded, and Tangayikan). Some can be devilishly tricky to identify and many source books have labeled them incorrectly for years.
