  • Nikon or Canon

Really want a DSLR..but i'm at a crossroad. Love the nikon but canon is looking great also.

So with a budget of $1200.00

    Which one should I get?

    Let the debate begin!

  • #2
oh, the lifelong debate of which camera to get...

Get what you are comfortable with...
Seriously, I love my Nikon but if someone tries to use it and they are not comfortable with it, then they should try a Canon (or Sony or any of the other players)

What every you get, for fish, invest in a macro lense.

lol... i was trying to decide the same thing.. but between the Canon 5D MkII and the Nikon D3X.

I found the reviews by Ken Rockwell very helpful.

I'm by no means an expert, but you can't go wrong with either one... I have a canon, but chose it for the purpose of switching off lenses with friends.

Perhaps you should approach this backwards and look for the lenses that you would be interested in and then choose the camera. Just my 2 cents.

                My recommendation: Canon T1i

It comes with a good stock lens, and now shoots 1080p video.

Buy these two lenses with it and you'll be set:

This lens has a very large aperture allowing a lot of light, which will allow you to increase your shutter speed, and lower your film speed, giving you the best conditions for shooting "non-flash" fish tank photography.

This lens will take care of all your zoom and outdoor/well-lit sporting/active venues.

These combined should keep you with in your budget if you shop around (online) and are all you really need to hit the ground running with a complete setup. With whatever you choose, good luck. :emt_thumbs:

I am a Canon guy and I am going to recommend you get the Canon EOS Rebel T1i.
                  Why ?
                  1. Its only $899.
                  2. 15.1 Megapixels
                  3. HDMI Camcorder built in
                  4. Can use any Canon EF lens.

A macro lens can be bought around $370 (for 60mm) and about $560 (for 100mm)

                  Keep smiling :)

                      Yo, D
Don't get caught in the megapixel count - that is a bunch o' crap. Especially if you don't plan to print larger than 11x14.

And also just so I can argue...
                      Go with the Nikon D90.
                      It's only $974
12.3 megapixel (and somehow this is really important - NOT)
                      HD camcorder built in
Can use any Nikon lense ...blah ... blah ... blah

D, you have large hands like I do. Put whatever you choose in you hands and use it. Make sure the button locations make sense to you while you use it. Depending on your investment, I would even say borrow or rent one for a day.

ddaquaria.. you are correct. There really isnt any need for the high mega pixels count when you are looking at a picture on your computer and correct about printing size too.

Again correct, put the camera in your hand to find out what you like / dont like size wise. I dont know about Nikon but with the Canon you can buy a battery grip which makes the camera bulkier and yes makes those people with large hands easier grip the camera. A Battery Grip can be bought for about $80 online.

                        Both camera's are good.
