  • Gold Nugget Pleco

Hey everyone. Bare with me as I'm not super experienced with different plecos. I'm looking at getting a Gold Nugget Pleco (L085 if possible), does anyone have any tips on keeping them? I have about 6 cichlids in my tank, and 1 regular pleco, but I wanna add this one to my tank. My understanding is they don't really eat algae, and they need meat and vegetable in their diet with zucchini etc. Does anyone have any good tips? Would they be safe with cichlids? Is driftwood a MUST for them? Does anyone know who in town might keep them and sell them? What's the general cost of one? Any info would be greatly appreciated, I want to make sure I'm ready before i keep one. I've read up on them some on the web but I want to see some first hand experiences, maybe i'll hear something I won't on a profile site.

Depending on which golden nugget you are getting, the one I have LOVES algae and cleans very well. Golden Nuggets unlike many other pleco's live in the rocky terrain of the fast flowing river system in the amazon river system. They live and hide among the rocks and do NOT need driftwood in their diet. I own a royal line pleco and they have to have driftwood in their diet. This is the only reason the tank with my Golden Nugget has driftwood in is because of the royal line. I never see my golden nugget on the wood, where as my royal line is always on there knawing away

    What fish do Jesper have

Do you think they would be alright with cichlids? None of mine mess with my regular pleco, or really any fish for that matter. I did have two problem cichlids that took out my peacocks eye but I gave them to a buddy a couple days ago and it's pretty peaceful in there now. Do you know where to find them in town?

I know Xtreme had 2 earlier this week, I don't remember the price though. These guys like to hide during the day and come out at night so don't expect to see much action from them!

+1 for Kivov -- mine come out the minute the lights come off the tank.. and I catch them all the time in the evening once the light is out but I am still around the tank :)
They work hard when they go at it.. and they clean quite well up after themselves.

At HAW we dont have any gold nuggets in at this time. However, we do have real good sized Inspector plecos. They have a dark, almost navy colored body with yellow spots all over. Fish Gallery also has the gold nugget but your gonna pay a much larger price.

Inspector Pleco is a carnivore, where as a gold nugget L177 is an omnivore. I have a L177 I believe and it does not care for the wood in the tank at all and does a great job cleaning rocks and attaches itself to rocks..

I forgot.. only one per tank unless the tank is very large (I would say more than 4ft in length. They dont like to share spaces with others as they consider them a threat to their breeding abilities. You also want to have a good current in the tank... as they naturally live in the stony areas of the rivers where the water flow is higher..

Ill like to share my POV on this specific pleco. This pleco had me very intrigued when first saw it at a fish store. I wouldnt recommend it for a cichlid tank for the simple fact it doesent like a high PH. Two, bog/wood is crucial for this fish's diet, vice bog/wood or any of certain kind lowers ph. It may not of been seen directly knawing on it, but remember most pleco's are a nocturnal. I know my 4 plecos in my 4 tanks are. This is prevelant when the light goes on, they immediately take refuge to their cave or hiding spot. Three not only this pleco doesent like other plecos, it doesent like low swimming fish or bottom fish in its roaming area. Now me i didnt learn all this till i didnt see it anymore, in which it was in a cave dead. I did all my research a day later, dollar short.
Oh mentioned above, that his golden nugget loves his tanks natural agea, this isnt a common attribute of this pleco, or not a normal behavior trait for them. Why i dont know kinda weird. If i had to take a guess how much your going to pay no matter what type of nugget you get, it will be in the ballpark from 25-35 dollars. If you do get it make note of a "sunken belly" and "sunken eyes" if they do dont get it. In most cases that i read, this means that it wont live much more then 2 weeks tops. Its called something but i cant remember what it is called.

I will vouch that it took some getting used to. My pleco is a snowball and he/she hides all the time. But at night he will come out looking for food. He actually borrowed under my large granite rocks and picked a spot right next to the outlet for the pump where the flow is the greatest and made his den there. But when he is out he is really cool especially if you have moonlight LEDs.

I dont know if there is a significant difference between snowballs and golden nuggets. But my pleco is in a tank with Corys with no problem. Also my pH is about 7.6-7.8 straight from the tap.

Peeled frozen table shrimp, frozen krill, and Hikari sinking carnivore/massivore pellets will work just fine.

We have our golden nugget with a green phantom, a galaxy, discus and 10 sterbai cats. I haven't seen any problems, he has plenty of driftwood to hide in. They do hide all day and as soon as the lights go out I put food in and he comes out right away to grab it. I haven't seen any aggression towards the other plecos or cats, if anything, our green phantom is the bully.
