  • Name some African Cichlids

I'm about to start a new tank. I want to put 3 different kinds of Africans in the tank, but i'm unsure exactly which ones. I'm going to be painting the back of the tank blue with a black subtrate and a few large pieces of holey rock. I have a color scheme that i'm trying to stick with so name some fish that fit this criteria

    Red, Blue, Yellow

Keep in mind that black substrate tends to absorb a lot of color and light, and you would have to add more to compensate the difference versus using a lighter substrate.

Here is a picture of what I think he is looking to make happen

I have to agree with J-WS6 -- black is just not a good color, unless you are willing to put a lot of light over the tank. This is why I changed out my black with PFS and it made the tank look a lot better

This is later same year with a re deco.. PFS

Dang, that is EXACTLY what i was looking for. I didnt know somebody else already had that idea. Now i have to rethink my decor. What if i did a black background with PFS and holey rock? Would that look good with the color scheme i wanted to do?

Yeah I think you would be happier with a black background.. your bright colors will show well, but honestly I think the blue with the PFS is the way to go like you see the tank in the picture above. It worked great for me. My mom bought the tank a year ago, and since then upgraded to a 90g and we but the blue background on it .. it still looks fantastic. Believe I dont think you will be disapointed. If you wait another month from now or there abouts my used 180 I have will be up and running with a black background (because it came that way) and then it might help you make up your mind.

I think the key if you have alot of black and white in your decor would be to get alot of very colorful fish - preferably either all males or a species where both males and females are colorful. I'd do one or two species.

I've often though about a P. saulosi species tank. This would work out well for you since they stay smaller, and aren't terribly aggressive (like demasoni)

Thanks Tim for the visual. I actually wanted to do yellow labs and demasoni. The fish you spoke of looks exactly like the demasoni, where do i find it? I think im convinced of the black background
