  • No tank brace..... Is this safe?

I have a 81X24X24 tank with 1/2 inch glass. It use to have a glass brace in the middle but it is no longer there. It does have the normal rim though. Is it safe to use or should I have one made?

    Thank you in advance,
    Jim

I think you should have one made. Without the center brace, the tank could bow and crack.

Check in with the retailers for their professional input, but, I say YES to having another brace installed.

I would install a new brace..  From the sounds of it, it sounds like you have a std 84x24x24 210g 7ft tank  -- find out the dimensions of the same brace and install it in the same spot, you dont have a failure later on.  Like everyone else says. you are going to end up with a tank that bows if you dont install it.

at 81", that kind of unsupported length... Considering simply supported, distributed hydrostatic load @ 24" depth = integrate hydrostatic head wrt draft... center of hydrostatic pressure @ 24 / 3 = 6" from bottom..... Differentiating deflection to get Shear (V) = dM/dx... Bending Moment (M) = dV/dx.... Gives highest bending moment at mid span....punch a few numbers..... bingo! I think you should consider getting it replaced.

But seriously, I figure if it was meant to be used without a brace, it would have been built without one from the beginning. Even 1/2" glass can bow significantly at 81" unsupported span.
besides... it would be much simpler to have it replaced than having to clean up the mess if something goes wrong.

You need 1/4" thick minimum and ask them not to polish the ends so it sticks better.
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'
