  • Geeks, get the popcorn! Elvis! You are one bad boy!

This morning while feeding Elvis & the gang I got the shock of my life! My protein skimmer always goes nuts during feeding time. Probally because I soak their food in vitamins and garlic extreme. Not really sure if that's the cause or not. Anyway, I went to take the cups of my HOB protein skimmer and got "SHOCKED" 8O . I couldn't believe what I felt so I tried again.  8O :aua: Boy was that stupid! Then I took the flash light to see if there was any water running down to the surge protecters.   No, No water, nothings wet. Maybe it was imagination. So I carefull touched the cup again.... . Ouch! :furious: Ok, It is a shock and it only took me three times to figure it out. I turned off both surge protecters checked all plugs, nothings wet, emptied the cups, turned everything on, went to put the cups back in and "SHOCK!"    :bsoop: I really didn't think that through did I. Ok, try this one more time. Get the flash light  :bscomehereyou: , start the search over, still don't see anything. Carefully touch the cup, no shock   , cafefully grab the cup to take it out and "SHOCK" . Now I have come to a conclusion, if I'm wrong I will apologize to Elvis with a nice juicy mussel, but if I'm right no mussel for him for a week. :naughty: A few days ago after the tank break he was chewing on everything, freaking me out, making lot's of popping noises. Now I think he may have chewed on the wire that's inside the tank connected to the pumps on the hob protein skimmer, and this is why I keep getting shocked. I would  :badsmiley: spank his little bottom but it's been too long and he wouldn't know why I was doing it. So tonight when I get home I now have the task of taking the protein skimmer out and inspecting the wire's for teeth marks. I really need to get an in sump skimmer. :?

BTW: Can anyone tell me how long your tank can run without a skimmer?

edmlfc -- You can last a while without a protein skimmer... just things will go downhill the moment you take it off line.
I am no expert by any means... and I am waiting for mikewhotruong to jump online and post a message... because he would know... or EK would know...
I am thinking you really should change your puffer tank into a tank with a sump so you can do all the skimming outside the aquarium...  I dont think Elvis is going to stop his chewing experiments.
I would look on craigslist for either a cheap PM skimmer or salt water tank setup with a skimmer cheap and just do everything outside the tank.

Re: Geeks, get the popcorn! Elvis! You are one bad boy!

I have a wet/dry but after I put the pump in it, there's no room for the protein skimmer. At the time that I got the protein skimmer I had no wet/dry so I got the hob. I tried once before to put it on the wet/dry but it's too wide. It's about an inch wider than the wet/dry wall. I was planning to change tanks in Feb. but the tank I was going to move them into broke. That plan is now, not an option. All plans are now on hold until futher notice.
:( . I even purchased a sump that the hob protein skimmer can be attached too for the other tank, again broken tank no longer an option. :( I have some work to do before I can set up the sump, like find an overflow box, pump, etc. I was working on all this before the broken tank. Can you tell I'm still upset about the broken tank. :) Sorry to ramble.........

Maybe it's because we think Water & Electricy do mix.  Like Oil & Water.

                How big is the tank?
There was a guy in Galveston who was selling some really nice stuff at a pretty reasonable price.
I believe he was selling a really nice overflow box, a Coralife skimmer (rated for over 100 gallons), and two pumps that run it all for just $100. He asked me to buy it from him but I didn't need it.
If you're interested, send me a PM. I go down there every week and I'd be more than happy to pick it up for you. I got a really nice AGA tank from him...beautiful.

Too funny! Thanks for the laugh, I needed it today. After getting shocked several times, I spilled my coffee all over me right after I got to work. Talk about wake up!

What size tank does Elvis live in now ?  125 ?
Can you add the sump to the system you have him in now ?  Just run the skimmer on a closed loop back into the sump. ?

Zulaab, Can't do that, If he did chew the electrial cord it may still shock me or them with the cord being in the water. Here is a link to the skimmer that I have:

I'm thinking I will either have to buy a replacement pump for the skimmer, hopefully just one pump, or replace the whole skimmer if the part is not available. I haven't checked it out yet so I'm still not sure that's the problem. Once I get home I'll pull it out and look for teeth marks. If I see only one cord with teeth marks I guess I could run it on one pump for now. Thanks for getting my brain working.

I'm going to pick up another tank from the guy this week for the CAK raffle, I'm going to call him later and figure out where I'm going to meet up with him. I'll get the specs on his stuff if you'd like.
