There are 2 80g tanks at work taht i maintain and i was wondering since i dont have battery pumps that would changing 20gs every 12 hrs be enough to maintain oxygen levels?

Be careful with the water changes right now because the water around town is potentially contaminated.  Also, the water plants will be dumping extra chemicals in.

You could just scoop out a pitcher of water from the tank and pour it back in to agitate the water and aerate it.

It's my understanding that Houston and the area MUD's are still saying to boil water before drinking or use bottled water.  I haven't heard that has changed, but then I may have missed the announcement.  I would not chance tap water right now either, for myself or my fish.

I agitated the surface of the water with a wire whisk.  I put the whisk partway in the water then rotated it between my palms and it seemed to work as 99% of my fish are fine.  Watch out for small livebearers - mine aren't too bright and would try to eat the whisk as it was spinning

Re: post- Hurricane Ike fish care

I have a 75G with 10 3-31/2" discus, 8 rams, 7 apistos, 15 cardinal and neon tetras, 7 rummy nose, assorted cories and a BN. Power went out Sat morn at 3AM and have fed bloodworms twice. I kept water aerated with 2 battery powered pumps. But water temp dropped to 74 this morning.

I stored 33 gal of water Friday prior to storm for drinking water.  As I am in a MUD district I guess i dont need to be cautious  of drinking water...have a filtered water feed on refrig anyway.

When power came back on filter kicked in and is running since 11AM ( I was at work) Question, I will do a water change with stored water, but do I need to worry about 2217 filter that was off for about 56 hours?...have lost a ram and a couple apistos when power went, but discus are holding up.

If your Eheim was off that long I would definately rinse out the media.  However, it may be too late, any toxins from dying bacteria are probably already in your tank.

Re: post- Hurricane Ike fish care

My 2 2217's were out of power for 8 hours and I decided not to chance it, so I unplugged them. I didn't want them starting back up and releasing ammonia back into my tank. I cleaned both of them out and restarted them yesterday when I got my power. I opened up my glass tops to get oxygen to my fish for 2 days and also used my Azoo battery aerator. The Azoo has a charged battery that kicks on when your power kicks off and can be set to continuous or intermittent aeration.

Well...I had 30 Gals of RO water that I used for the water change. All I can do is hope..So far no one seems to be doing poorly. Actually. all seem very well....they are crowded up at the glass awaiting a feeding..Maybe I'm lucky..
