  • Bala sharks mating!?

Well i came home today and fed my fish as usual and started watching them. Shortly after i noticed that 2 of my bala sharks were swimming very close side by side as if they were attached and then they continued to swim all over the tank doing a sort of dance and bumping into eachother. As they were doing this i noticed tiny white things coming out of one of them which im almost sure were eggs. The crazy thing is i have only had them in my tank for 3 weeks tops and they are only about 2" long so i guess thats a good sign that they are doing well since everything i looked up said they are very hard to breed. My question is how likely is it for these eggs to hatch and how long might it take? thanks for any and all feedback. i actually have a video that i took but just not sure where to upload it...

Hi, Nickgsr!    I do not know how likely it is for the eggs to hatch. I know that some of my female fish have layed eggs but the male did not fertilize them.  :(  I am not realy sure how long it will take for the eggs to hatch (if they do) but I think it would be around 2 weeks to a month. I hope this helps you.

Breeding: Balantiocheilus melanoptrus (Bala shark) has not been bred in captivity without the aid of hormone injections.

per Aquatic Comunity They grow to 1+ foot and breed in outdoor ponds
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

                Re: Bala sharks mating!?

It would be a rare occurrence if they breed in a small tank.   But anything is possible.
Let us know what you see over time :)  It would be interested if indeed you where able to breed them :)

yea it would be cool to see even though i would not know what to do with any more tank busters! but im sure i could find a home for them somewhere.  One of the main reasons i wanted to know is cuz i want to do a water change and vacuum some gravel but dont want to suck up the eggs if they have a chance of hatching...

Well if by some miracle they hatch I'll take all of them.  But phish is correct. No breed in captivity without help. Mine do this mating about 1 time every couple of months.  I have seen eggs and never gotten babys. Good luck

found an article you might wanna read.  i was shocked. but basically,  about 4 inches they are sexually mature, and they scatter there eggs, and dont protect them.  maybe protect them.  im gonna try to next time.  im gonna put them in a tank with no substrate and noone but them to see if i cansave them.  but artical does say professionals in asian breed them in capativity but doesnt sound like its often.  heres the artical.

If you want to protect the eggs then lay down an egg crate which you raise about 2in above bottom.  This prevents mom n dad believe their eggs are food and ingest them before you have a chance to pull the parents.

that sounds great idea there zulaab cause they are scavengers and dig in the substrate all day and find leftovers to eat.

well from the look of it mine are still too young to fertilize the eggs at 2" but once they get around 4-5" i may try to isolate the pair to see if i get  some baby balas! thanks for the feedback...now that i think of it, how would i know when to isolate them and wouldnt the stress of putting them in a new tank make it less likely for them to want to breed?... so i guess i would just have to setup the tank and have them in there for a while till they are ready but even then i would need a large tank for them to breed correct? just thinkin out loud, any thoughts?
