    Re: Discus Thread

tnguyen - Didn't really have a choice in the matter. I have no idea of his story, nor what "kind" of discus he actually is. He was abandoned and basically going to be sent to the fish farm in the sky, so I took him home. I was told he was sick, though I don't see any symptoms except a little fin rot, which I think is due to his being kept in not-ideal conditions for a few days.

He (I call it a "he," dunno why) is eating bloodworms like there's no tomorrow, and is alert and active. I'm keeping his water clean, and just seeing how it goes. I really hope he does okay. I know that discus like company, and I'm in luck that he's still pretty young (only about 2.5 or 3" TL) and am hoping that I can get a whole group for him. That is, as soon as I find out what kind he is, where he's from, etc.

Mzungu - its okie :)  I am very happy to hear that you stepped in and helped a poor fish out.
I have some dubs right now that are sick, and I am almost crying each time one of them is dies out :(
I just did another water change and added salt back into the tank.
Tomorrow morning they are getting a shot of Tetracycline in hopes this will start curing them up again.  Clout does not seem to work, and the only I have left expired last month on the package so I know how you feel about your discus.

              Re: Discus Thread

I'm curious what kind of discus this guy is. He has an orange body, red dorsal and anal fins, the anal fin is lined with black at the bottom. Red eyes, and a black tail. No marks on his body, just solid orange. Anyone know what kind this is? I have absolutely NO idea about all the different kinds of discus, and I'd like to know so if he does well I can get friends for him of the same kind.

I give up, are they different species or just different colors ?
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

                  Re: Discus Thread

As with 90% of the discus on the market today there are only recognized 4 types of discus in the wild, blue, green, brown and heckle.  All others including Red's are man made, line breeding.  Without a picture I dont believe anyone here is going to be able to give you a perfect answer for you fish :)
I cannot wait to see pictures :)  I love Discus :)  I just decided this time around that I was going to see my life more with African fish than South Americans.

I've never really liked discus, actually. But this guy made me fall in love. I'm twitterpated. My head is filled with visions of the new discus tank I will have when this guy gets better and I get tankmates for him. It's also filled with quite a large remodelling of the apartment...

Szidlon :)  LOL something is telling me her new job is what is causing her to want to remodel her apartment :) :) :) :)

hehe :)  Soon it will not be long before Mzungu will be looking to sell a whole bunch of small tanks in favor of a few larger ones.. or she will be working on getting a better rack system setup.  (having never seen her place but with the description that there are tanks everywhere in her apartment I can only think she will need to stack things)

                         Yup. Darn job!

Not to get too off topic, but I've made an official list of the 8 tanks I want to have going, no more. So yeah, I'll probably be offering some of my smaller tanks soon. Maybe in time for the GHAC auction!

Anyways, I was just hoping maybe someone could point me in the right direction as to what type this guy is. I guess I'll start searching around the internet and stuff.  8)

Sigh. I was hoping I wouldn't have to post a pic, just because his tail doesn't look great. It's getting better, but it's not wonderful looking. Oh well. We all have our better days, right?

P.S. The white dots aren't ich or anything, those are ostracods that multiplied in this tank while it wasn't occupied with fish.  :)  He likes to hunt them down occasionally.
