    Re: Help. Looking for lights

Watts= how much power is being consumed.
Lumens= how much light penetrates the water.

But since having a lumen meter would not be cost effective watts is the next closest way to determine lighting into the tank.

lumen can be effective by too many factors to go by what is on the internet since whatever condition they tested in is not what your tank is gonna be. That said though T5 spread throughout the tank is gonna be the best option for the planted tank since you could have it cover the entire tank or just get a little crazy with it and MH that thing!

I have a 70w MH retro over my little planted ~5g right now and love it!

With what ballast? Are the real T6 ballasts or do you still have to use t10, t8 or t5 ballasts?

This may be a dumb question, but aren't the lower T numbers brighter by definition. Same watts smaller tube = more lumenens per watt?
