I didn't have any trouble getting them to eat. I read somewhere online that they eat tiny crustaceans so I dropped a little shrimp pellet in there. They weren't interested at first, so I swirled the water a bit to make little pieces fly everywhere and they went nuts. I've never kept any native fish before. Its fun. I'm looking forward to going on more collection trips.

Cool fish, Katie. I wish I could catch some "wild" fish around where I live, but my only places to go are a small creek that's usually empty(I might go check to see if anything's popped up), or a lake that only has big fish(like cook them and eat them for dinner big fish, which are far too big for my 10 gal). It sure seems like a lot of fun, though.

Try throwing a baited minnow trap in a local bayou. I have caught Texas cichlids, sunfish, mollys, fathead minnows, sheephead minnows, and introduced Macrobrachium rosenbergii prawns. In the brackish waterways in Freeport, I have caught sheephead minnows, Gulf Coast killifish, Longnosed killifish, Diamond killifish, Bayou killifish, Jade Gobies, mollys,
pinfish, hermit crabs, and sunfish this way.

Gambusioa affinis is a non-native species through out most of it's range. It was introduced by the government in an effort to kiill mosquitos. It didn't work -of course- because the fish eat more fish eggs than mosquitos.

Back to the OP's request for a source of info on native fishes of Texas, a lot of the TPWD websites aren't that exhaustive, focus mostly on the fish anglers would catch. I've found this is the best, most comprehensive website of information on every species of freshwater fish in Texas waters:

This one doesn't come up - wondering if it's been moved?

Which one are you referring to? Not clear who you're responding to from your post.
