        Scarecrow : I haven't got a brain... only straw.
Dorothy : How can you talk if you haven't got a brain?
Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.

you put a bottom drain at the lowest point so you can drain out the mulm that builds up.

lots of good articles at that site.

you dont necessarily need a bottom drain if you're not going with cement or fiberglass. I made my own pond from scratch thats hold a little over 1500 gallons. I used plastic liner for my pond it works great. I've had it for over 5 years now it is as strong as ever. Ive got all my materials from http://www.nelsonwatergardens.com/ in katy. They have lots of know how and can answer any questions you may have

I have probably made 10 different filters for my pond; some worked OK ,some ,not. For me , by far the best is to make the pond about 25% bigger ; build a porous wall ( eg. cinder block, brick (with holes) ) , fill behind it with lava rock . put a pump at the bottom of the far end (in some way that you can remove it).
There newer pond books that give more info.
The water flows through the gravel to the pump; the pump goes back to tthe pond/fountain/stream.
It never needs cleaning, the pump never gets plugged- well almost never, I have snails cleaning the gravel and once in a while one gets in the pump.
My gravel bed is less than 10% of the pond and it still works. You can plant bog plants in the gravel.
