  • how many discus in 65gallon?

i am seriously thinking about plunging into discus after years of just seeing them in others tanks, so i am thinking of moving my breeding koi angel pair to my 30gallon and then bringing in discus in my ADA120p 65gallon tank after i rescape it, with the angels gone, the tank will only have harlequins/tetras/cories/2 honey gouramis and 6 rams (german/gold/bolivian)

based on above, do you guys think i can add 6 discus? the will still have 10gal/per fish and no other big fish in the tank

the footprint of my 65 gallon is 48"long * 18"wide, so the footprint is similar to a standard 75gallon, just the height is lower

55 gallon - AGA standard - mix cichlid
    30 gallon tall - eclipse acrylic - semi-planted

Sounds pretty crowded to me. Even though the empty tank volume may be 65 gal, you will have less by the amount od substrate and decorations/hardscape. Also, the fish you have in there subtract from the volume available to the discus. Four might work, but I wouldn't put six in there.

75 gal is something like 20" high, yes? Which is about the lowest you want to go with Discus (They are lateral swimmers) And your 65" is lower? And you will have substrate limiting their lateral range even more.

I don't think your issue will be how many...a few Juvies may be OK..but once they become Adult size even one will be uncomfortable.

i agree i think 2-3 juvies but as adults you should move up to a 30" high tank

i don't want to get juvi's if i can't keep them happily as adults, so i guess i will have to hold off on my discus dream until i get a house and get a 100+ gallon tank :(
