    looking for large river stones or mountain like rocks

    well my tropheus tank has been delayed a bit cause i was shipped the wrong substrate so i decided to put more thought into the rockscape.

    im thinking either a pile of large river stones like i have already but with more stones or bigger ones or a giant piece of rock that would imitate a mountain in my tank.

    heres the tank and the riverstones are on the right and they are about 10" L 4-5"W but im looking for much bigger and no so much as round so i can stack them.



    next is similar to what im looking for in the giant mountain look but i want like 40x bigger, along the lines of 14"x14"



    when going to blockbuster tonight with my fiance there was a giant piece of rock in the parking lot that looked like it was pushed there from the grass by a car, it was broken into a few pieces and when i checked it out it was almost perfect but the only problem was that it powdered a bit so i left it. with the rocks im thinking landscaping yards or the like for my find but wanted to see what you guys have seen around town to limit my gas wasting.

    i guess im trying to pull off something like Iwagumi scaping on the right side and a rock cliff on the left side of my tank.

    here is what i googled but i need it in a bigger scale.... iwagumi scaping

      this is the tank I pictured when you mentioned mountainous rock



      but now that I see that last link you posted hmmm..


      Heres my opinion... I reaaaaally hate to give someone else money for finding a rock, so before I would buy one from somebody I'd look around real good to see if I could find a cool one in a ditch or something.

      Having said that, there are a lot of rocks where I live, so I will look for some good ones for ya, and if I find one I'll post a picture to see what you think, if I find some good ones it's no big deal for me to swing a couple by for ya

        thanks a lot ramius!!

        i was actually posting to see if anyone has seen a place offering nice rocks. i found one that would have been killer in my tank but i think it would clouded the tank more than anything.

        last time some of us went to austin to visit friends we found a hugungous piece of holey rock but it sits in my cousins 75g and it takes up half the tank.

          Due to size & weight, you may want to consider making your own fax rock
          landscape ....... similar to the rock walls some of our members have made.

            Down the street from me there is an open area of the bayou (that has no concrete) and there are a lot of rocks that are very large. You could go down there and check it out.

              I went to a landscaping place that sold landscaping rocks by the pound, and it was dirt cheap compared to what I've seen at stores, so take a look at some of those places near you.

                Try some large peices of petrified wood, it is sold at most good rock sales yards and not to bad by the pound.  It cans also be found in parts of Texas.  We love using the petrified wood in our fish tanks.

                  yeah i was thinking either diy foam rock or petri for what im trying to get at.

                    Rock yards are the cheapest(0.18-.25 per lbs) and usually have the best and largest selection of river rocks. Take some water with to pour over the rocks of choice, so you can see what the rock will look like when it is wet. It will have a different appearance when dry in comparsion to wet. That way you will know what you got. Most rock yards don't like to do exchanges.

                      Taking water to test color is a good idea.  I'd forgotten all about that little trick.  My Dad was a rock hound and into lapidary and he was forever spitting on rocks to see what the polished product would look like.

                          Where are the rocks in bayou that was refered to in earlier post.  I need rock.  Hopfully before Christmas.
