  • ro/di filter replacement question

Ok I have this unit and its the first time to change the filters, looking for cheap good filters lol

This kit works with all BRS 4 Stage RO Only Systems along with most other RO systems that use 10" canisters. This kit includes: Purtrex 5 Micron Sediment Filter MATRIKX CTO 5 Micron Carbon Block MATRIKX CTO 1 Micron Carbon Block We recommend changing sediment filters when they become visually dirty or there is a noticeable drop in pressure. Change carbon blocks every 6-12 months depending on use. This kit does not include a membrane filter as they need replacement every three years or so, depending on water and set up.   Recommended Installation* Stage One - Purtrex 5 Micron Sediment Filter Stage Two - MATRIKX CTO 5 Micron Carbon Block Stage Three - MATRIKX CTO 1 Micron Carbon Block   Our filter kits feature some of the most widely used and trusted brands in the world including GE, KX Technologies and Pentek. The 10” filter size is the industry standard and will fit our systems as well as virtually every brand of RO system that uses similar looking carbon blocks.  Most of the filters included in our kits are NSF Certified or WQA Gold Seal Certified and Manufactured using FDA-compliant materials.   *This is our recommended filter arrangement and we have found to be the best combination for the most common installations and water conditions. If you have something unique about your water supply or installation please contact customer service and one of our WQA certified water specialists will be able to assist you. Our onsite chat feature is the quickest way to receive advice but we are available to assist via the phone and email as well.

i am between this 2 options is this all the same b/s or does is really a diff in the carbon and sediment filter ,
i already have a new membrane and di resin to go .

thanks for the time to look.

    4 stage or 5?

Remember you need chloramine removal since our water is loaded with it.

    First stage:
Most sediment filters in aquarium RO systems are inexpensive surface filters that quickly lose their effectiveness when the surface becomes clogged. Purtrex Depth Sediment filters are true graded density filters that capture larger particles at the surface and smaller particles towards the center. This means the Purtrex Depth Sediment Filter will trap particles throughout the entire thickness of the filter. 0.6 or 5 Micron nominal filtration Fits all standard 10" RO units True Graded Density We recommend changing sediment filters when they visually become dirty or a noticeable drop in pressure is noticed.   Many cartridges claim to be depth filters. But to be a true depth filter, a cartridge must be able to retain contaminants throughout the entire cross section of the filter.   A graded density allows larger particles to be trapped near the surface while smaller particles penetrate the larger open areas to be trapped nearer the center of the filter in the smaller openings. Without graded density, a so-called "depth" filter will operate in practice only as a surface filter. The Purtrex filter has the graded density that is required to be a real depth filter.   The Purtrex depth filter is an exceptional value for general applications where long life, high purity and low change-out frequency are required. Produced through GE Osmonics patented melt blown micro fiber technology, Purtrex is a 100% pure polypropylene depth filter with exceptional dirt-holding capacity. Purtrex true-graded density filter matrix (lower density at the surface of the filter with progressively higher density toward the center) captures particles throughout the entire filter depth. This translates to longer life and fewer change-outs than existing string-wound or resin-bonded filters.   Purtrex contains no wetting agents, solvents, anti static agents or binders, and meets the requirements of the FDA for food and beverage contact. The filter incinerates to trace ash for easy disposal.

    Second:
Kx Technologies MATRIKX brand carbon blocks are the most trusted and widely used carbon blocks in the world. The 10” size is the industry standard and will fit our systems, as well as virtually every brand of RO system that use similar looking carbon blocks and the 20" size works in our legacy BRS Spartan unit along with other 20" RO systems. Most common filter arrangements If your system utilizes one carbon block we recommend installing the 5 Micron CTO in the second stage after your sediment filter.* If your system utilizes two carbon blocks, we recommend installing the 5 micron CTO in the second stage after your sediment filter and the 1 micron CTO Plus in the third stage. Available in 10" and 20" *You may use a 1 micron CTO PLUS in a single block arrangement, however, depending on pre-filtration and sediment content of your home's water, it may clog faster than you would like.   Matrikx CTO Data Sheet   Matrikx CTO 5 Micron Carbon Block Most widely used carbon block in the world NSF Certified and WQA Gold Seal Certified Manufactured using FDA-compliant materials Optimized for chlorine and organic chemical treatment 5 Micron rated filter – Nominal* 10 Micron – Absolute** Rated for 6,000 of water @ 1/GPM*** *Nominal rating will remove >85% of particulate of given size from water with single pass filtration **Absolute rating will remove >99.9% of particulate given size from water with single pass filtration *** This is a total of all water processed and includes product water as well as waste water. If you find you are not getting the full life out of the carbon block it is likely due to a large volume of sediment in your homes water supply.  Please try our ROSAVE.Z premium line of sediment filters for optimal performance.

    Third:
Chloramine is becoming more common as an alternative to chlorine for water treatment and must be treated differently. Chloramines are different than chlorine, which is used by most municipalities to treat the city water supply. Chloramines are chlorine reacted with ammonia to create a more stable disinfectant that will remain in the water rather than gassing off. At least 10% of the nation’s water supplies now treat their water with chloramines and this is becoming more and more common.   Treating with standard carbon blocks can result in the addition of ammonia and other compounds harmful to an aquarium. The Pentek ChlorPlus Carbon Block promotes additional reactions which result in water safe for fish and corals.    If you are unsure if your city uses chloramines, call your city water supply company and ask them directly or ask for a water quality report. To find the number for your water treatment facility check your water bill or call city hall.   Recommended filter arrangement for chloramine treatment when using the Chlorplus Carbon Blocks Stage One - Sediment filter Stage Two - Pentek ChlorPlus carbon block Stage Three - Pentek ChlorPlus carbon block   Note: With advancements made in filter technology we now supply BRS Universal Carbon Blocks and include them on all of our BRS Universal RODI Systems which we would recommend for chloramine filtration over the ChlorPlus Carbon Blocks. If you wish to upgrade your current system to utilize BRS Universal Blocks you can easily change out any catalytic carbon cartridges and ChlorPlus filters for Universal Carbon Block filters.    Specifications: 1 micron rated filter – Nominal* Chloramine Reduction: 2,500 @ 0.5 GPM Chlorine Taste and odor: 50,000 Gallons @ 1GPM Media : advanced bonded powdered activated carbon *Nominal rating will remove >85% of particulate of given size from water with single pass filtration.

Filling a DI Cartridge is easy. The most important thing to remember is to tightly pack the DI resin into the cartridge. Loose DI will cause the water to channel through the DI, greatly reducing the effectiveness. Available in Four Sizes: 2.5" x 10" Cartridge (Standard - most used cartridge size) 4.5" x 10" Cartridge 2.5" x 20" Cartridge 4.5" x 20" Cartridge NOTE: 99% of customers purchase the 2.5" x 10" Cartridge (SKU 200002)   How to refill an empty DI Cartridge Unscrew the bottom cap from the DI cartridge and remove the foam ring. Pour in the DI resin and pack it down tightly as hard as you can. Tap on a counter to help settle the resin. At this point the resin should be tightly packed flush to the rim. Put the foam ring back inside the screw cap and screw the cap on. Place the newly filled cartridge into the RO canister and make sure the arrow on the side of the cartridge points up.   DI Cartridge Refill Instructions

If you have a 4 stage with DI/membrane, skip the second stage I listed (carbon block) and go straight to the chloramines removal
