  • Fish ID Please.

Went for a 2 hour long photo excursion today. Found another ditch or creek or bayou whatever they are called around here. saw a ton of smaller fish all gather near the side near a bridge. They were all being herded by a couple larger fish.

The Mosquito fish I think that is what they are all herded to the bank.

Here are a few pictures of the larger fish. These are the fish I don't know the ID of.

Looks to be a Sheepshead Minnow (Cyprinodon Variegatus) a local brackish species found commonly in Southern areas of Houston. Related to the various pupfish families and really a fun cool fish. More similar in behavior to a cichlid or perch then a topminnow.

Always enjoy the What is this? threads

Pics appear to be of a colorful little male in breeding colors. A male sailfin molly, about the only other thing it could be, would have an elongated dorsal fin and far more color. I know quite a few folks look for these in native brackish tanks and have a hard time finding anyone that collects/sells them. They work quite well with the Violet Gobies in a native brackish biotope tank.

It looked more like a sheeps head minnow...

I am gonna go back to the ditch and see what else I can find.

Do you need a fishing license to catch non game fish with a dip net?
