After selling my 170g Set-up I acquired a Fluval Spec 2. It's been up and running a couple of weeks now and I like it. The only downsides Are the flow bypass slot in the bottom, and the fact that the pump, even though adjustable, is just way too powerful for a Betta, which is what I plan on stocking in this tank.
These are easily remedied though. Just seal the flow bypass with silicone, and then cut small holes in the return hose and the flow reduces nicely.
Right now I'm just growing out plants in the tank, dwarf hairgrass and Java Moss. The substrate is Fluval stratum for plants/shrimp. I'm dosing twice a week [Mondays and Thursdays] with Flourish Comprehensive, and I'm doing a 25% water change every Sunday. I also have made a Co2 yeast reactor and I'm using the end of a bamboo chopstick as the diffuser. To grow the plants out I have a 45w, Full Spectrum 5500k CFL bulb [for film work] on the tank. After the D.Hairgrass has carpeted I plan on reducing this to either the stock lights [8 watt LED] or a 13 watt 6500k CFL.
At the moment I'm recording Time-Lapse footage of the tank for fun. 1 image every 30 minutes for however long I decide to do it. =D
Right now, besides the plants [Dwarf hairgrass and Java-Moss] I have an interesting array of life in the tank. I noticed a Cyclops that darts around occasionally. I've 2 Malaysian Trumpet snails. And also these white dots that crawl on the glass. They are so small I cannot see any detail except white dots moving around on the glass. Everything I've read so far states they are harmless.
After I get a heater I plan on adding Red Cherry Shrimp that a friend is giving me. After they are established I then plan on adding a Betta. I'm leaning towards Plakats and Halfmoon Plakats. I always seem to like them more than Crowntails or Veiltails.
I do want to add some tall plants to the back behind the driftwood and java-moss I'm just not sure what to add. So I'm looking for some suggestions. =D Thanks!
