  • Petro. Macrognathus Dine

I got a visit from Gene D earlier last week since he was in the neighborhood so he could take a look at my tanks. Subsequently, he offered me temporary custody of these beauties to see if I could get some breeding action from them. What remains of the original import from C&H are these four (1m/3f). Oddly enough, the dominant fish in this colony was a female while in Gene's tank and the single male was a scrawny beat up little guy who had escaped death thanks to Gene's timely intervention and care.

Once in my tank, the hierarchy was reset due to the presence of other larger Petros and the scrawny male started coloring up and picking on the other males (Longola, Ikola red eye, etc.) and making his presence known.

Today is their first day in my tank so I imagine they will color up more as time goes on. And I pray that they will start breeding soon so that this rare variant can have a sizable colony going here.

Thanks Gene and let's hope for the best with these guys. I'm excited to help out this colony any way I can.

Male, just started to color up today, and you can see where he had a chunk taken out from near the front of the dorsal fin

      Females:

And the freak of nature ex-dominant female:

The color on this female is amazing! Hope she doesn't lose much of the color now that she's a little lower on the totem pole.

          Looks nice . . . for petros. :)
          Scarecrow : I haven't got a brain... only straw.
Dorothy : How can you talk if you haven't got a brain?
Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.

Thanks Tim and Johnny. More tank puppies for me to feed! and they're hyperactive like Jack Russels LOL

Only four of the kind in the land, allegedly.

                Two suggestions:

                1) remove the big female all together. Keep her in another tank. Perhaps with tropheus and ony let her eat 1mm pellets. Let her lose mass. Only reintroduce her to the main group once the big male is bigger than her and fuller in body size.

                2) hand feed the Petros full size gulf shrimp maybe cut into 3-4 big chucks. They look skinny and totally not in breeding condition.

Like I told you before, it's in the male(s) of a group whether the colony will breed. If you only have one male you have to do something to changes these relations. You doing the right thing by keeping your other Petros in with this group but the macro-macro relationship may need greater direct intervention.
I ate my fish that died.

I do not think that is a correct statement...

Word on the streets is that some males were sold off before the colony all died.

But it's all hearsay. Lol, plus I don't really care.

Very good info mj. I have to move some fish around and i think i need to take out the big Trophs in the 280 so i can power feed the Petros like i want to. Good idea about letting the big female lose mass, but before i do that I'm gonna observe them all together for a week or so to see if the male will dominate the big female as it is. Trust me dude, they're gonna be in great condition on short order.

Well still looks like these are the only ones with a shot at breeding then, unless one of those males magically appear in Tejas.
