Are you sure the clam wasn't already dying? Snails usually go after decaying matter with a few exceptions.

What kind of sail is that?

I'm thinking the same thing Darbex thinking.

Bristle worms have the same reputation for eatting clams but they only go after ones already dead.
I ate my fish that died.

clam was already dead I think. The whole bottom is missing. That looks like an astrea snail (usually just an algae eater)

The clam was perfectly healthy. Tektite on marshreef got the ID right. It was a murex snail. They feed almost exclusively on bivalves and other mullusks...

He's gone... and we'll just leave it at that.

                    That would be the exception.

                        Yeah, that does suck.

that clam looks kind of big too. Must had been pricey.

The snail was given to me. The previous owner didn't know what it was, and neither did I. The clam was an 3.5 inch ORA Derasa clam. It wasn't cheap, but not the end of the world. I am more pissed at myself for not doing the research.
