  • DIY Carbon bottle ideas anyone?

I am wondering why a guy could not purchase a 3' or 4' piece of 5'' or 6'' PVC, cap one end drill tap for 5/8 hose (phthon) screen mesh etc then fill with carbon and screen mesh drill tap 5/8 hose end etc and seal both ends and use this as a carbon bottle? What is the difference in this and in the carbon DIY snake? Or any race car guys out there why could I not take an old 10lb nitrous bottle, weld on 5/8 male hose ends one on the center where the pickup line is and one on the outside to allow the water to have to go through all the carbon before it leaves the bottle. ??? There has to be easier cheaper ways of getting a carbon bottle then what these companys are charging! Even an old Scuba bottle? Just some ideas the PVC would really be cheap and easy I think. Thanks CD

I was thinking the same with the PVC pipe... I wanted to try it out next time I have to build one.. but there are some issues I am thinking of.. but they could be overcome. I would have to talk to DIY master FF and see if he would do it.. I am sure he might have already thought of it and has a reason not to do it.

If you wanted to be nifty you could actually seal one end off cap it and then put a hose end on one end and run a 5/8 piece of pvc all the way through to say about 5'' from the bottom this way the water would travel to the bottom of the container and have to travel all the way through the carbon and exit up top where you would have another male hose end for exit into the aquarium. There is no reason this would not work same principle as carbon bottles. Could use an old canister filter also that some one doesn't want or need and make it into a carbon container bottle etc..... Keep ideas coming. CD

I thinks it is the time of contact. The shorter the distance. The less time the carbon has time to do it's job

The way I would do it.. would be to get a 4ft 2" pipe. Get Flat bottom cap. Then drill a hole for a 5/8" brass fitting near the bottom of the 2" pipe, and install it. Add a short 1.50" pipe which I have perforated already with a cap on the end of it (also perforated) Then add enough foam in the bottom to cover the brass fitting and pipe. (this is so the carbon will not flow back into the "in" part of the pipe.)
Then install a flat bottom cap. Make sure its glued on hard core.
Then install at the top a union joint. (this allows me to remove carbon down the road and reload).
Then the correct parts on top of the union joint so I can again attach a brass fitting on top so I can run a hose from it the many feet that is going throughout the house to fill up the tanks with it.

The carbon bottle will stand up on the cap itself..

Question is will it break ?

I like the old canister ideal. But I like the long pass of the snake better. You can make one out of a pentair aquatics fluidized bed filter easy or phos reactor. You will have to slow the flow.

I went by lowes today, tell me what ya think! I saw a 6'' PVC 2' long doesn't sound big but do the square area of it and its quite a bit of carbon, for $15 and end caps were $9 each or you could get a clean out (threaded end for future removal of carbon) for $12 each. Now seal one end up, put two threaded holes in the top of the cap one in the center that would have a say 5/8 or larger tube running down to a few inches off the bottom then on the other hole thread a 5/8th hose end to run water to aquarium! you would want to screen this hose end so carbon will not escape! Heck you got about $40 or less in it before carbon! How much is carbon where would best place be to get large amounts of it? What do yall think about this idea would it work? If to small you could always go with the 6'' by 4' section? Let me know. Thanks CD
