  • Little help please?

Okay, I have about a 5 year old 110 gallon Oceanic RR tank with stand. Originally the stand was stained black. Well, for some dumb reason I painted over it and now want to bring it back to it's natural wood tone? Do I strip or use pressure washer and sand smooth/stain/poly later?

I would say strip, although some small crevices may be hard to get to.

I think it will take a combination of stripping and sanding.

For me, stripping is too messy. I would probably on sand it. If the original stain went deep into the wood you might have a difficult time getting back to a natural color.

For sanding I love the power sander called a "mouse" or something like that. Sanding can be a lot of work but in my opinion produces a better result.

Don't pressure wash it! The water will raise the grain of the wood. If you need to wash/wipe it down, use mineral spirits. +1 on the stripping and sanding. Personally, I don't have the patience to sand through all that so I would use both.

Oh, and keep in mind that paint gums up sand paper really quick!

Invest in an electric or air sander, then use good quality sandpaper to avoid it loading up on you. An auto paint supply house has much better stuff than HD or Lowe's. Once you get past the old paint getting through the stain to wood won't be that hard. A messy alternative is to use lacquer thinner on a rag WITH RUBBER GLOVES ON and wipe off all the soft paint, then start sanding. That is what I usually do.
