  • Drain and fill adapter

First, I hope I'm not ripping off someone else's idea.

Here is the other project I mentioned in the Carbon Hose post. After years of having hoses flopping around and mopping up spills, I made this gadget. You simply hang it over the side of the tank. The metal part is isolated from the glass, so that isn't a worry. Attach a garden hose to the hose fitting, and either drain or fill your tank. If you want to clean the substrate, attach a flex hose where I have the intake screen attached. Lowe's has a size of reinforced flex hose that fits. I used an old HOB intake screen that happened to fit.

All of the elbows are glued to the pipe, but on the aquarium side of the device I put two slip connectors that are not glued, and a section of pipe inbetween. The section can be made shorter or longer as needed for the depth of one's tank. I used 1/2" PCV simply because I had it already, but you can make it out of any size you desire, and adapt the hose attachment from there. Lowe's sells the hose adapter in 1/2" or 3/4" sizes. As long as you seat the slip connectors completely, they shouldn't fall apart under normal water pressure.

As cheap as this is to make, one could make a second one out of 1 1/2" fittings and join it to the big blue swimming pool vacuum hose for draining the tank quickly.

Hopefully this will save someone else from cleaning up a mess.

I will have to post mine soon.
I use 1" flex spa hose attached to a 1" PVC pipe for draining. I drain my 180 in about 7-10 minutes.
I use the 1.5" 16ft spa hose with carbon as my carbon filtration.
I have the whole thing in a 18 rubbermaid tub, which I put outside the house (all spills will then occur outside) and I run a 50ft hose to the tank which I have an adaptor which hangs over the side.
Pictures to come when I have a chance.
