  • The Hunt for the Red Bulu Points - F1's from Europe

well thankfully for Geoff.. I can read 80%+ swedish. I have a good idea of where the guy is at too :)

To the good news and the bad news...
Red Bulu point Petro adults. -- 5000SDK ~ $629 each (when reviewing his for sale area of adults.. they are not listed)
    Red Bulu point Petro 5-7cm (2-3 inch juvi's). -- 2500SDK ~ $315 each

    Translation from his site.
Red Bulu points are some of the finest and most beautiful fish in Lake Tanganyika. There are only about 100 of these fish in the world in aquariums, costing 10,000 Swedish Krona a pair (or about $1300 USD)
a pair. I consider myself very lucky to be one of the few people who keeps these fish and it took me 2 years to obtain them.

All he sells are the F1's at a cost of 2500 swedish or about 315 USD a piece

    What fish do Jesper have
180 WC T. Moorii Chilambo +1 Petro trewavasae.
    110
Cyps, WC Xeno Spilopterus Kipili WC/F1/F2 T. sp red Kiku

Btw the fish I would love to have from his selection, granted the Red bulu point would not be bad.. but I really love the colors on the petrochromis macrognatus ikola kambo. They just look great :)

I might have to rethink this red bulu thing. $6,300.00 for a group of 20 smalls. But then again sell 20 and you got your money back? only problem is coming up with the cash. PIPE DREAM FOR ME. I'm Going to get my lottery tickets now! (:

dang better have some serious cash money before hitting this guy up

but there are a BUNCH of people out there that would and could probably pay for as much fry as you can supply.

the problem is the initial investment

                    Dude...the fish for sale are 2-3" Juvi's

One box to ship to US for $300 could most likely hold about 30-40 of those guys.

                    We're talking serious Money now.

                    $315 x 35 fish + $300 shipping = $11,325

For Red Bulu's...I would be willing to up a couple grand.

Alex's colony is not working in a standard 240 gallon, there has to be another way.

F1's might be the only way to have a group of them successfully.

I read an interesting article about petros....

Stated that a more even ratio would probably work better though not for the faint at heart or empty pockets.

Said to use males of conspecific as dithers which would not only have the dominant males fired up beautifully but keep aggression off the females.

Now I did a little unofficial study myself on some super aggressive fish that just about everyone has had bad dealings with and found that high flow keeps aggression down too... now this was enough flow to almost keep them in motion constantly. I gathered fish from everyone that wanted to get rid of them due to aggression and grouped them together to fill the tank with only the meanest.

I would love to apply this to petros along with some other ideas I have to keep aggression minimal. Now if anyone can talk Alex into parting with his group please LMK... I honestly think I can make them work.

You make some very valid points. I think the Europeans with smaller tanks are making things work better possibly because of flow and turnover.

With the experience Alex has, I dont understand why he has not been able. I think a lot of it is time and dedication to the project, but at the same time...not really sure...

Obviously Red Bulu's have been and are breeding in Aquaria.

Of the colonies I know/read of they are all breeding except for Alex's.

I am starting to gear up for the day.... will be ordering a pair of Vortech's this weekend, installing a controller to automate more controls of the tank as well as control params, hopefully upgrading lights to further promote algae growth and simulate day/moon cycles and of course a big tank!
