  • Petros in a 125 Gallon - Will it Work?

Never kept a colony of petros before. Might be getting a 6ft 125g. Was wondering if I could keep a colony of petros in there?

If I could, what do the experts recommend?

It will suffice and I would recommend petrochromis.

Probably better to see what's available and go from there.

Alex usually gets in some smaller trewavasae's, you might be able to get away with a colony of those. That way you could have more time with them before they grow the tank out..

          I've got 12 Trews in my 150 with 33 Kasakalawe's....

j, I really like the trewavasae but I was wanting to keep something else cause a few boxers already got trews.

What is the smallest petro variant?

Have you seen a full grown famula tattoo?

I think the only small petro is petro fry/juvis.

                      I have seen bigger.

Petros are big period the only ones that are not are petro fry/juivis.

The only question that should be asked is which variant is more docile in which one could get away with stuffing them in a 125g.

                        Tricolor or Trews.

These are the best Petro's to start out with IMO.

                        Good luck MJ

                          Re: Petros in a 125g?

I got 21 Famula's in a 180 gallon mixed in with some Tropheus.

Personally, if you are limited to the 6ft wall space, I would not want smaller than 180 gallons.

From what I've seen Derek's Polyodon have seemned the most docile Petros I've seen in captivity.

All other Petros are mean bastages.

Red Bulu, Kasumbe's, and Longolas are definately not gonig to work in a 125.  Just way too much agression.

From what I have read and experienced, the most success comes with Famula types, and Trewavasae.

The Famula are the most "Tropheus" Like and are more colonial than the other Petros.  The others are more individuals but the agression is more pinpointed on one individual, which means when the @$#@ hits the fan it happens fast.  The Famula agression is much more spread around like Tropheus.

No matter what Petros you get any success with them is momumental, no one is doing it.  If your looking for something differnt from others, any Petro success is going to be that.

                          Best of luck man!!

I had my first famula's holding in the last couple weeks, but they either ate the eggs or spit them out.  Its the first set of spawning I have had. with them.

The Trewavasae are just not starting to get some activity.

My Largest male is getting 6-6.5"  and my next largest female is also around 5-6"  Those two are starting to do the "nasty."
