  • Best Way t/Cover Intake Tube Set Up for Fry/VERY Baby Shrimp

Hello!  I'm currently cycling a 14 gallon tank to house about a dozen Guppy fry as well as some VERY baby Red Cherry Shrimp.  I'm very concerned with them getting sucked up in the intake tube and was wondering what would be the best thing to use to cover the intake tube that would be strong enough to hold up under water as well as allow flow though enough as to not inhibit the performance of the filter and strain the motor.

    Any ideas?

i believe a sponge would work best, there was a thread on here not too long ago by a shrimpkeeper detailing this

I used a fairly open cell piece of foam over the intake on my filter.  I think it was like the 20ppm foam from a Rena XP filter.  I cut a piece the width that I needed and then too a razor blade, but a knife would work and just sliced the middle so that it would slide over the intake.  Pending the size of your intake, you could just take a piece and push it up into the intake tube itself.

I have successfully used prefilter media wrapped around the intake tube and sponges in fry/shrimp tanks.

For a quick fix a paper towel works well too.

I have used a media bag and covered the in take.. that has helped not getting guppy fry into my HOB filters....
I found out that 4 of them had made it into the HOB, when I emptied out my 10g tank of fish and then poured the filter water into the tank so I could take the filter to the sink and clean it.  4 babies fell out and then I start to worry more where in there.. there wasnt.  (btw all live too)

Coarse filter sponge have always worked for me.....or you could just net the shrimp out when doing filter maintenance....always found them there regardless.
