petro traw packing again. swallowed at least 7 times in the last 2 months. any advice?

Keep going..  The biggest reason I have seen mouthbrooders shallow or spit and eat, is that they get chased and in the end give up and spit.. Have you tried to pull her and put her in her own little 20g tank and let her live a little alone for a while ?

As for the trew....I would either make it a species only tank(at least take those barbs out) or pull her to her own tank like the others have suggested....another thing you can do is provide safe havens for the female to retreat to. In my tanks there are crevices where they could be by themselves or at least out of view from the colony and so far that seems to help with the fry survival.

How long does she keep them for before, the eggs are gone?

Females eat eggs becuase of stress and inexperience.

I cannot remember how many fish you have in the group, but what is the sex ratio of them?

Geoff-11 total-4 big females 6 to 8 inches, 5 med 4 to 5 inches, 2 med males.  the biggest female is the alpha fish. 3 days everytime they disappear. HELP SPOT come get these barbs.

Maybe it's the male not sealing the deal? if they are infertile she could be doing away with them as well.

John, just dump the barbs in that 300 gallon pond until someone comes and picks them up. The beauty of successfully breeding your trewavasae's and having them hold is way better looking than having a handful of filament barbs swimming around in your tank.

I am leaning towards that the smaller males are'nt able to secure a area for spawning.

Is the big boss female the one holding the eggs then eating them?

Or is she too interested in managing territory than taking care of the babies?

what?  i got the 3 males & 3 of the females out to the the pond. these fish do not know how to hide. back & forth. 6 still in the tank. all females. seems to be calmer.   thanks all--john
