  • My 55 gallon i finally got decoration.

Well i finally got me a bigger tank then my dinky 20 gal. and got a...well seems like a dinky 55 gallon. I want it bigger already !! lol.

Well i had it go through the cycle stages and finally have all my cichlids in there. Today i went to get some rocks that i liked the way they looked. Hopefully the picture shows.

What if i have 2 tiger barbs in there with those rocks? What will happened?

Should i add a background? Rock background? Deep blue background?

What kind of rocks are those?

Suggestions are welcome. I'm not finished with it, but i finally got some rocks for them to hide in and i wanted to share it.

I have a black background on mine. I also have black sand. I think with the white sand a black background would look great. I also took java fern and put in the holes of the holey rock. It gives the fry a good place to hide. Here is a pic of my tank. This is actually an old picture, I no longer have the shells in there and the java fern has really grown.

BTW: the rocks you have are called Texas Holey Rock or Honeycomb Rock.

I thought live plants cant be put in with cichlids? I thought they would eat it.

          It looks nice!

Some live plants can be put in with cichlids. It all depends on the type of cichlids and the type of plants. Anubias and Java fern works well with some types of African cichlids.

I like the idea of a black background as well. Most of my tanks that have Texas Holey Rock have a plain black background.

If you put two tier barbs in your tank... then... you'll have two tiger barbs swimming around in there! Tiger barbs ten to do a bit better in groups, so I woudl go with five or more. Is this what you were asking about tiger barbs?

Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.

Im going to try the black background.

No, i mean, i thought the rock "leaks some kind of something" that make the water not tolerable for other types of fish. Because the sign above the rocks said "for cichlids tanks"

What kind of light should i use for that tank. The lights on it now are the one that came originally when i bought the kit. Do i need something more brighter?

Re: My 55 gallon i finally got decoration.

Texas Holey Rock tends to raise the pH of the water, which makes it desirable for most African Cichlids. This is a VERY slow process, however. In my opinion, you could put THR in any tpye of tank that you want.

As for the light, it really depends. Do you want to gro certain types of plants? The original lights are fine for the fish.

Oh, thats what i read about it. I just didn't know it was a "VERY" slow process. lol. Good to know. Thanks.

I did not have plant growing in mind because i was told from the get go, that live plants could not be grown with the cichlids.

What is GHAC? If you don't mind me asking.

The GHAC stands for the Greater Houston Aquarium Society. We are a brand new aquarium club. We have website at http://www.myghac.org. You can browse old newletters on that site to get a better idea of who we are. Any questions are welcome!

We have an event coming up next week. I hope you'll be able to make it to Fish Gallery on Sunday. There will be more info on it posted soon.

I would stick with the light that you already have. If it ain't broke...

Wow, it's not much, i mean it was thrown together. But still makes me feel good, thanks for the complements. I still much to go, so hopefully it should look better next time around.
