Most people use car sponges, cut in half.

        Re: sponge filters

Its like $1.20 a car sponge. That makes 2 good size sponge filters.

Forgive my ignorance, but what's a car sponge?

Car-wash sponge. Yellow or multicoloured sponge. Wash it really good before you put it in the tank.

just be careful sometimes on non-aquatic safe sponges.  They can sometimes contain phenol washes that can poison your fishes.

Only use what others have tested tried and true..just my .02

                  Re: sponge filters

yeah I was going to say make sure that you get the kind that people have used before.
Make sure they are the dry kind (ie no soap or other chemical items added into them)

If you are worried about it get your 5g tank out a couple of feeder fish and drop the sponge in there..
If the fish pass away then..  well you get my idea.

That's exactly what I was thinking....feeder fish test.

The Walmart ones are fine, just wash it and squeeze it till it runs clear.
