  • Hey Geoff! What books?

You mentioned in another thread that you had several books on Trophs/Tangs.  I have been searching online and they are ranging anywhere from $54 to $100!!   8O  Is this for real??  Seriously!!  I'm going to start searching my online used bookstores, but some titles would help my search.  Would you mind sharing the titles of the ones you have (the English ones please)   :)

    Thanks!

Thank you!  That's going to help out a lot.  It's hard to tell which books are going to have the information you are actually looking for unless someone else has read it, or you are in the store actually browsing through it.

yeah i hate that about the different pet books, especially when they all have such conflicting info at times, very confusing and troublesome.

              Re: Hey Geoff! What books?

What I like about the "Tanganyikan Cichlids" book by Konnings, is that its his first book printed in the US.  He gives a "cartharsis" like approach and bellows out all that he knows from years of keeping the fish, and a few trips to the lake for photos.

Then the book sells so well, he gets another trip to the lake and releases "Tanganyikan Secrets" which does not give a lot of new information, but has a lot of better pictures.

Then from the sales of those books, plus his Malawai Books, he gets a really nice trip together and puts together a really nice book with excellent photos, and really good detailed information about them in the wild, and releases "Tanganyikan Cichlids in the Natural Habitat."  This book overall for information and pictures is one of the best for all Tanganyikan Cichlids, but a lot of the information is based upon observastion at the lake.  The first book, Tanganyikan Cichldis" has a lot of good info based upon keeping the fish, and some observastion experience.  Those two books together, would make a Tanganyikan expert.

The Tropheus year book was the very first books in English 100% about Tropheus.  It was a colored page journal of about 50 pages.  Frank Schneidewind is a German author who had already written 2 books on Tropheus before writing this on in English.

The Aqualog that Peter Schupke has compiled is 100% on Tropheus, and was originally released in German.  It was then translated into English and realease here.  This book contains lots of photos, the history of the fish, and when it was first collected.  Some of the information is not complete or accurate of some of the fish that he has a limited info on, or has had to use info from the African Diving Ltd. experience or released info.  Some of that info, is secret or is purposely mis-directed to prevent future companies from knowing the exact collections points to get the fish.  So some info is not 100% accurate.  That is ok, because Konnings trips were sponsored by some of the collectors like Toby Veal, and so even some of his information is not 100% reliable. Konnings will try to make it seem professional and masked, atleast Schupke will be honest and tell you in his writings when he does not know for sure or is speculating based upon others reporting.

The Back to Nature, and the Enjoying Cichlids are books that are 100% aimned at keeping them in Aquariums, nothing more noting less.  They are good books, but if you want something more than what you need to keep them alive, the other books are so much more enjoyable.

Hope this has helped you to decide, and if you like give me a PM, I might can meet you somewhere and let you look thru them and decide for yourself.

              Take care,

              Geoff

Just want to update you guys on what I found...er...didn't find.   :(

Cichlid Year Book "Genus Trophues" - YB-019 - Tropical Fish Hobbyist - Frank Schneidewind - I contacted the publisher and they show it as "OUT OF PRINT - NO COPIES AVAILABLE".  They only have the copy that is in their library and of course, it's not for sale.

Yeah, me too.  The lowest price I can find is $85.00, and considering it lists for around $111.00, I guess that's a decent deal.  But that is still a good chunk of money.  Let me know if you want the link to this book for $85.00.

I am trying to see if I can find it in a used book store first.. I have had some luck in finding some very good beginner books for Malawi Cichlids and other fish.. actually almost nothing on Tanganyikan's though :(
I am hoping to find a used copy somewhere around the $50 range

                            Has anyone looked here ?
