Wheel of Time Author Robert Jordan Dies

    By BRUCE SMITH

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — Author Robert Jordan, whose "Wheel of Time" series of fantasy novels sold millions of copies, has died of a rare blood disease, his aide said Monday. He was 58.

Jordan, whose real name was James Oliver Rigney Jr., died Sunday at the Medical University of South Carolina of complications from primary amyloidosis with cardiomyopathy, his personal assistant, Maria Simons, said. The disease attacks the body's major organs; in Jordan's case, it caused the walls of his heart to thicken.

He wrote a trilogy of historical novels set in Charleston under the pen name Reagan O'Neal in the early 1980s. Then he turned his attention to fantasy and the first volume in his Wheel of Time epic, "The Eye of the World," was published in 1990 under the name Robert Jordan.

Jordan's books tells of Rand al'Thor, who is destined to become the champion who will battle ultimate evil in a mythical land.

Book 11, "Knife of Dreams," came out in 2005; there was also a prequel, "New Spring: The Novel," in 2004. The other titles in the series include "The Great Hunt," "Lord of Chaos" and "The Path of Daggers." Jordan was working on a 12th volume at the time of his death, Simons said.

He is survived by his wife, Harriet McDougal Rigney.

Steve, if you where into Fantasy books you have most likely read his books.  He wrote under several pen names.

Robert Jordan - Wheel of time series.
As Reagan O'Neal - The Fallon series
Jordan is one of several writers who have written new Conan the Barbarian stories.
Other works * Cheyenne Raiders (1982, under the pseudonym Jackson O'Reilly)

Well, I never did enjoy reading that much, not enough patience or maybe just a poor choice of novels. I did read some Ray Bradbury in school, and of course Hemmingway, a few others, but again reading never really excited me that much.
I hate to admit it...but one of my favorite books I did read after school was Watership Down.....

Watership Down GOOD BOOK!!!! I LOVED it!!! A teacher recommended it to me after he found out I raise rabbits and he even bought me a copy!!

I'm very partial to the Harry Potter series though. Not because of the movies either! I really love to read. Has anyone read Animal Farm? Good book! I'm re-reading Lord of the Flies right now out of boredom, but that is also a good book!

Holy crap. i have been readin wheel of time for years. In fact i have the last two in hardback. im devestated. i dont know whether im more upset at his death (i mean i didnt know him) or the fact that there will never be an ending to that most awesome story. it was a work to rival lord of the rings in its originality and its depth, a truly unique universe.

just be careful, there is already 12 in the series, and you know it wont have an ending unless someone else writes it, anyway the books average 800 plus pages each, not lightweights.

Wow! That's pretty cool. So do you think someone will finish it? Maybe his wife or a good friend? Maybe he wrote his ideas down for an ending and someone will just have to write it out... That's kinda sad...

One author I found sorta stimulating was Carlos Castaneda, I read a couple of his books back in the seventies, those where strange days, just like Mr. Morrison said they where..... :)

NOOOOOOO!!!!  I have been reading this series for years.  I am actually in the process of rereading all of the novels.  I knew he was sick, but I was hoping he would be able to finish the story line before it was too late.

He was a great author and will be missed.

Re: Wheel of Time author Robert Jordan dead at 58

This is what I have read in the last 12 hours.

                        1.  Robert Jordan did let a writer who will finish his work know all of the endings to book 12 (The last one).   They will complete it.  The book will most likely be around 1500-1750 pages rumors have it.   Robert Jordan had written large portions of the book already (been working on it for 2 yrs)
                        2. It is at this time unknown if any of the prequels will be finished.  He did one but there was to be 2 others following the adventures of Moraine and Lan and the rise of her best friend to power.  Edit The name of the book will be A Memory of Light

For those who have read the books understand the devastation this brings the readers because you have for 17 yrs so far followed every release date in anticipation.  I didnt start reading his series until book 8 came out and I was HOOKED from then on.  If you love reading fantasy and you have not yet picked up the Wheel of Time series, then go pick up the paper backs and start reading them.   It is for me the ultimate best series of books in the fantasy world I have ever come across.  Many of my friends where saying - he better finish this thing in case he dies.  With his death, we will now wait in anticipation to see if book 12 will be what we all hope for, an ending to a story which we have waited forever for to end.

it is always sad when the world loses someone who brings joy into a not so certain existance. my thoughts are of sadness for his readers, but joy to the knowledge that he is in a far better place than you or I.....peace be with you eternal Mr Jordan, for you truly were a gift to so many.....

Ahh, I am in the process of finishing the first book.  All my friends have read the series and finally sucked me in and after about the first 50 pages in, I couldn't stop reading the book.  Yeah, this is devastating to fans of the series.  He also wrote the Conan the Barbarian series which were the basis of the movies.  He was in the process of finishing the last book, even if it took him 1000 pages to do it.  Who knows how far along it is but to fans of the series this was like the last book of Harry Potter to Jordan fans.

If you haven't had a chance to read the wheel of time series they are great books especially for fantasy readers.  At least for me I just started reading so maybe by the time I get through 11 someone will have finished the legacy for him.
