  • What's the Difference?

I was just curious about the name of this club, " Houston Tropheus AND Petrochromis Club" , so what is the difference between the two fish? are they related or non related similar in nature or various attributes. Are they 2 different fish at all?

Would someone explain the difference if any.

    Thanks

    CF
Truth is the cement that holds the bricks and stones of a sane and civilized society together. Remove the former and the latter will crumble.

Two different tanganyikan fish but both similar in ways they are kept, fed, breeds etc also their grasping teeth/jaw.

IMO petros are like trophs on crack!

Geoff should be by to further explain in depth.

      Re: What's the Difference?

The two fish are from the same family of fishes in the rocky littoral of the first 20-40 feet. Some Petros are deeper.

Petros are much more agressive and eat a lot more.  They also can get in the size ranges of 5" to 14"

Tropheus in Aquariums range in size of 4.5" to 5.5"

So,pretty much EK said, Petros are Tropheus just magnified in everyway.

There are some Petros that are more like Tropheus and can be managed like Tropheus in aquaria.  But for the most part, Petros need a lot more experienced keeper, and someone who is going to be ontop of everything.  Anything can happen with Petrochromis, and if you look at my sticky in the links section for Petros, you can look at pictures of them.

Their huge mouths can do some serious damage REAL FAST.

Typically people that like Tropheus also like Petrochromis, and Simmochromis.  But that's a different storey.
