  • Brichardi question

I have a 55g and I want to have 2 (or 3?) breeding paris of brichardi. My questions are...

Should I just put 10-12 juveniles in the tank together and let them choose their partners - then remove the rest after 3 prs. are formed?

Are you able to put different types/varieties of brichardi together, or will they fight each other?  Would they "stick with their own" when it came breeding time?

Also - Is it bad to only have fish from the same parents when you want breeding to take place?  If I put in a few of each from different parents would they naturally choose to mate with someone who was not from the same parents... or am I giving them too much credit, lol?

    Thanks for your help!

Yes...-you are giving your fish way too much credit.  If you put different variaties together you will get hybrids at some point.

You can have fish from the same parents breeding with no problems for a pretty good while.  It is good though to introduce new blood and genetics into the line at some point though.

CichlidFan and Fishlady have a monster group building as we speak and they only started out with a few adults and are having new broods every few weeks.

      Re: Brichardi question

From what I can read Brichardi are family fish allowing others to assist raising their young, so especially if they grow up together they will all spawn for you and assist each other in raising their young.   You can most likely let the Juvi grow and they will almost for sure spawn for you without needing to remove a single fish.

Wow, that would be ideal if I didn't have to remove any.  I was afraid maybe the males would fight.  Is it better to keep only one variety, or does it matter?
FishLady has been kind enough to offer my a few of her fry, so I am very excited about that :-)

          Re: Brichardi question

i would stick to one variety so that you avoid hybrids, if you dont care and just want to see lots of babies then ok, but if you ever want to sell them or give them away most people want the actual pure strains (most of the time, at least thats my experience) if you dont start with so many you can keep other fish with them, but may lose some or most of the fry. Unless you really work at getting them out of the tank and raising them separatly

            Re: Brichardi question

You shouldn't have to remove any unless you get one or two that get naturally exiled like the thread that they have going rightnow.  The only fighting that would occur will just be for pecking order of dominance.

              Re: Brichardi question

I think I will stick with the same variety to keep the pure strain.
I am glad to hear that they should all do well together, other than exceptions of course.
I have a little over 60lbs. of rock & CaribSea aragonite (not the power fine sand, but the one just after that - #1 not #0). Hopefully they will enjoy that.  I am going to get a small piece of sinking wood for in there too.

                Re: Brichardi question

I wound up with one dominant male on the left end of the tank and one dominant male on the right end of the tank and all the other males cowering under some driftwood in the middle, coming out only at feeding time.  I put a bunch of coconut shells halves and flower pots (big end down) in both ends (with a 1.5" hole in the top) and the females clamed one and defended it.
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

                  Re: Brichardi question

Yeah, it would be a good idea to set up separate areas so that they can claim territory for themselves.

                    Re: Brichardi question

I am thinking about arranging a set of rocks in both corners & putting the wood in the middle.  That would create 2-3 divisions.  If I find that there is more than one dominant male, should I remove all but one of them?
... or should I remove all males that become overly dominant toward each other?

                      Re: Brichardi question

No because the dominant male will be the one doing the breeding unless you have enough space to sustain two separate groups.  It's just like a tank full of Peacocks to a point.  You will always have one dominant male in the group.

                        Re: Brichardi question

So, just let them be if there is more than one dominant one since that would mean more than one pair?

                          Re: Brichardi question

firecracker, cichlidfan bought 3 brichardi juvies....he put them in a tank with a few other cichlids....i then bought him 3 large males and he put them in there too....at first all was well.....then the "cedar point gang" formed it's legance.....eventually he had to pull out all the other cichlids leaving just the brichardi's in there....they beat up everybody.....(we use this tank as a deterant to other fishies that want to act badly or we're having a dicipline problem with by threatening to put them in with the CPG..hehehehehe...) now they live in a commune situation as it were....there are dominant males but they don't fight for the females....they didn't form pairs either, they all seem to live in the same area of the tank and they all share in the duties of rearing the babies....but they did recently exile one female ...guess she broke the rules or something to that effect....she got really depressed and we had to remove her from the tank....she's now living in my 150 with a bunch of big fish...green terror, sevrums, angels, ect.....and she's doing well....eventually i would love to try and mate her up again....but for now she's doing okay.....as for the "cedar point gang" they are cranking out fry like a puppy mill i swear.....but it's really cool watching them grow....and as i mentioned to you before...i have a nice male dafodil and a blue masked female that i have gorgeous babies from....just waiting to see who they will look most like...?????......they are just now getting the electric blue on the fins so i don't think it will be long before i see.....but my suggestion to you is throw em in there they take care of themselves i can assure you.....don't be too picky about them....they seem to have a very good grasp on the evolution of reproduction....wink wink....but if you have any questions i'm sure cichlidfan would be more than happy to accomodate them for you.....just ask.....

                          fishlady.......

That was the largest "..." connected sentences that I have ever seen....LOL.

I got dibs on some of those babies when they are ready to go.

Can you post a pic. of the 'dafodil' and 'blue masked' brichardi?
I am not sure which of the 2 I should do... they look pretty similar, don't they?
                              Thank you all so much!
