  • 5G "Crypt Cove" Journal

I am starting my first ever planted tank journal." CRYPT COVE" . This is my first attempt at an actual nano planted Tank. Bought this 5G Odessey Cube at the auction a few weeks back. Finding the right kind of screw- n bulbs for these was really difficult as i wanted some thing more than 20W over this.
    Specs:
    5 G Odessey Cube.
25W CF 6500K Lights of America bulb.
    Red Sea Nano Filter
    AquaSoil Amazonia II
    Bright Sand
    ADA Black Wood

Ferts will be mostly Seachem Series. Have not yet decided if i am going to do a DIY CO2 or just go with EXCEL. Most of the plants are  Crypts.

    Plants:
    Cryptocoryne Wendtii "Brown"
    Cryptocoryne "Mi-oya"
    Cryptocoryne beckettii ''Petchii''
    E Tenellus
    Xmas Moss

    Fish:
    10 Jelly Bean Tetras
    5 Red Cherry Shrimp
    2 Ottocinclus sp

I first started with some hard scape trails.......

    Partitioning  AquaSoil and Bright Sand.

The rocks were laid out to cover the partition.

Next went in the Black Wood. The Xmas moss is tied to one of the pieces.

These are all the crypts and Ludwigas that went in..........

Now comes the planting. I started with the foreground first planting around the rocks.

Atlast after 3 hours , this is how it looks. Excuse my crappy picture taking skill's , but i was running out of "Patience " at 2:00 Am.

I would like to hear any constructive criticism from the forum members.Any new ideas are welcome.

You might have use DIY since the crypts might not take well to the excel.

Nice layout man! I like the first layout better....some moss up top draping down would have looked nice! Try planting inbetween the bottom branches too to soften it up a bit.

I really liked the hardscape in the first picture... looks like a great start.
      Scarecrow : I haven't got a brain... only straw.
Dorothy : How can you talk if you haven't got a brain?
Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.

Thanks a lot guys. Even i loved the first hardscape, but was not sure if that placement of wood would hold on once water went in there.
This was the first time i used AquaSoil so was worried a lot about crumbling it and turning the water brown.
Tim thanks a lot for the plants.

Use a rock or something to hold it in place.

Yeah thats how i did it this time but the piece of wood was not long enough to make it impressive. lets see how it fills in.

Could you take another picture of it, since it's been up a day or two now?

I LOVE the way the driftwood seems to be pouring over the rocks. Great start!

                    Re: 5G "Crypt Cove" Journal

Its been 2 day since the set up. The water has cleared up. I was really scared about the Aquasoil turning the water completely turbid but Ohhhhh its Aqua Soil II and water is pretty clear.Crypts are doing fine just had to nip a couple of leaves which were showing some signs of melting. Added a little more  moss to the wood. I have also added a DIY CO2. All this is also followed by 50% WC for last 2 days.
                    Here are some more pics:

                          Purty! Nice job.

Fish Ranch usually has a few types of nano fish, and I'm sure Fish Gallery does, as well, if you're looking.

Fish Gallery has Jelly Bean tetras that are nice along with the sparkling gourami's.

Fish Ranch has a lot of different rasboras/tetras/barbs/boraras that are great for Nano's.....my favorite place to be when shipment time comes!

hey guys thanks a lot for all the info. Right now i am very much inclined towards Celestial Pearl Danios and some CRS if i can find some decent ones. Hey Q Jelly Beans tetra / Boraras brigette would be also an option. Thanks for the heads up. If any one makes a trip to Fish Ranch please mention any nano fish they have . I stay down south so cannot check regularly.
