They have switchblades along the side of their mouths... most loaches have this as a defense

The one i was adding to the tank was about 4-5 inches and had some huge barbels sticking out.
I never knew that till i was trying to reach into the bag and he was poking the heck out of me. And holes leaking all around the bag.

They always have the barbels, and no, never had an issue.
