either way looks good...but have you thought about change the background to black? and the fonts to baby blue...
there is a really famous forum in hong kong...and they been like that for many many years..and that's the most comfortable color combination to me...

It should elongate the member info box. It should behave very much like tables/spreadsheets.

What happens when the post text is longer than the member info on the left side on version #2? Like, if it's a really long post? Does it just elongate the member info box? Or does it wrap the text underneath the member info box?

With format #2, the page length of all threads will increase exponentially since the header is twice as tall. This means more scrolling for longer threads. Although you may not see it for some threads, the long ones will be longer and will generate more pages. This will be even more apparent on your cell phone and will be hassle to read. You'll be endlessly scrolling looking for content. I say keep it as is. Just my 2 cents.

You can change to 40. That's what I set mine at a few days ago. Makes it easier to read in the journal threads.
